New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - January 15, 2011, New Braunfels, Texas Page 6    Herald-Zeitung — Saturday, lanuary 15, 2011Dr. Ken Peters retiring from NB Presbyterian By Gretchen Weicker Special to the Herald-Zeitung After an afternoon reception on Sunday, fan. 23, the Hev. Dr. Kenneth Peters and his wife, Marilyn, will both be retired. They and the 700-member congregation of New Braunfels Presbyterian Church feel the impending loss. Ken and Marilyn established the foundation of their relationship as high school debate partners at C opperas (;ove I ligh School. I beir union and Dr. Peters’s gifts have served the church and the city of New Braunfels for 21 years. Peters has served on the hoards of United Way, S.O,$. food Bank, C Communities In Schools, and is active in the Noon Lions Club. He has also been a popular and regular book reviewer at the local library and (krmal County Senior Citizen Center. Until her retirement in 2001, Marilyn Peters was a teacher at both Buiverde and Frazier elementary schools. With his Ph.D. in early American history from UT — Austin, allowing a part time instructorship at Austin Community College and her own teaching, they were able to support his degree program at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Simultaneously, they interned at Blanco Presbyterian Church as well as launched their then small children, John and Meredith. The call to New Braunfels Presbyterian Church attracted them because of the unique beauty and character of this charming town in Central Texas. Not surprisingly though, the quality of the congregation drew them most profoundly. "While the membership represents a wide theological and political spectrum, members seem to intuit that the health of the church is more important than a single position,” Peters said. He specifically hopes this tolerance is his legacy. Colonial American history revealed a paradox to him, "the value of individual integrity" within a unified group. Dr. Peters preaches into the paradox of faith regularly: Cod is both infinite and intimate. God of the vast universe can locate each one of his children even in a little Texas town. Peters’ parishioners have grown to expect intellectual depth, breadth ol knowledge, wonderful self-deprecating humor, terrific stage performances, surprising "supper club" piano playing, and devoted pastoral care. I he Peterses will continue to enjoy their grandchildren and look after aging parents. They expect to travel "off the main roads," read, publish some writing, and perhaps when the time is right, return to part time church work. Even if they ultimately relocate to a town such as Georgetown where they both started college, the word “home” will always apply to New Braunfels, Texas and the Presbyterian Church by Landa Park. LAURA McKENZIE/Herald Zeitung Pastor Ken and Marilyn Peters stand Monday inside the sanctuary at New Braunfels Presbyterian Church. A farewell reception honoring the couple will take place at 4 p.m. on Jan. 23. J Devotional Page Clyde VV. Moses dealt with Korah but Dathan and Abiram refused to respond to his summons. Moses called an assembly of all of Israel. He wanted to settle the question of whom the Lord wanted to be in charqe of « the Israelites. After a prayer to the Lord, Moses instructed Korah and his followers to appear with Aaron before the Lord the next day with incense r-censers, and present them to the Lord.^ Korah and his followers met with Aaron and Moses in front of the tent of meeting and the Glory of jJ the Lord appeared.    . The Lord chose to destroy those 250 gathered^ Moses and Aaron prayed and the Lord had the 250 elders to separate themselves from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.    » Moses declared that if these 3 rebels were right, they would die a natural death but if the earth opened and swallowed them, all would see that the three rebels had threatened the Lord with contempt. Immediately the earth cracked and opened and swallowed Korah and his men.    % IKK. Ktmlelt Atlvcni*ing SenLc. Inc.
