For Ed and Nancy Strieker, their dream came true on Dec. 7 when they opened New Braunfels' first smoothie shop, The Smoothie Stop, in the Hunter's Creek Center on Texas 46 West. "It was Nancy's dream to open The Smoothie Slop," Ed Strieker said. "My father, who lives in California, became seriously ill and 1 had to resign from teaching to take care of him, so it was a good time to open." The Strickers have lived in New Braunfels for 20 years. Ed Strieker was a tennis coach at Canyon High School for 17 years, while Nancy Strieker retired from teaching home economics at OakRun Sixth Grade Center in 2006. The couple said they wanted to go into the smoothie business to give New Braunfels residents a healthy alternative to sweet drinks. As former teachers, the Strickers said they know the value - and sothetimes headache - ofj school fundraisers and have come up with an original idea to help. "We can set up any school or business with a smoothie or coffee fundraiser and give them 10 percent of the proceeds right away," Ed Strieker said. He said he would take his espresso cart and smoothie machine to schools and businesses to make it easy for sponsors to collect money on the spot.
