New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - January 14, 2007, New Braunfels, Texas Page'2A - Herald-Zeitung - Sunday, January 14, 2007 IN BRIEF From staff and wire reports KERRVILLE POLICE WARN OF VEHICLE BURGLARIES - Kenville police are warning residents not to leave valuables in vehicles after a rash of burglaries. Kenville Police Chief lohn Young said vehicle burglaries usually are (tl lenses of opportunity and happen very quickly. "We should not provide the opportunity," he said. "Roll up the windows and lock your car even in your driveway." According to Kenville Police L(. Joe Lanning, it is possible that the same group or individual is involved in three burglaries that occurred Wednesday. The burglaries occurred in the BOO block of Jell'erson, the BOO block of Water Street and the 100 block of Al Mooney Road. GALVESTON METER ERRORS COST CITY $22,000 - Parking meters are a pain for anyone who cannot remember to have a stash of quarters on hand when making a trip downtown and they've become a pain for the city also. With this in mind, and at the request of downtown business owners, city officials installed credit card processors on some of the area's busiest streets. The cashless meters, referred to as pay-and-dis-play stations, arc easy to use - swipe a card, enter a time limit and never worry about having to dig for change. Parking meter attendants simply insert an electronic paddle into the meter to read the transactions and carry the data back to the finance department for processing. : The operation is easy. The only problem is it does not work, and tile . city is missing $22,000 in bad transactions during fiscal 2005-0(3. By D.Ashley Verrill StaffWriter Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst will take their official oaths of office 10 a.m. Tuesday. The ceremony will be broadcast on the Internet for the first time in the state's history. The one-hour ceremony can be accessed at the governor's Web site, governor on Tuesday morning starting at 9:30 a.m. Supreme Court Justice Wallace Jefferson will swear in Perry and Dewhurst on the south steps of the Texas State Capitol, during one of the only joint sessions between the House and the Senate during the 80th legislative session. The 80th regular session began Jan. 9 with the swearing State's first black district attorney ready to work DALLAS (AP) - Craig Watkins had no luck getting hired as an assistant at the Dallas County district attorney's office. Now he runs the place. Watkins is the state's first black district attorney. He took over an office this month where a prosecutor once produced written guidelines for keeping minorities off juries. The victory fulfilled a dream for Watkins, a South Dallas defense attorney and business owner and the first Democrat to hold the post in 20 years. He failed twice al being named an assistant DA. He has no prosecutorial experience but is brimming with confidence. "I'm thankful for the fact that they never would lure me. If they did, I'd be just like one of them," he said. As if to show he's not one of "them," he made headlines by firing 10 high-level prosecutors. Watkins is a tall, imposing man with a strong will to win. He seems a bit uncomfortable with the media but answers questions with almost startling directness. Robert Kepple, executive director of the Texas District and County Attorneys Association, said he has found no record of any previous black DAs in die state. Watkins told The Associated Press during a recent interview that diversifying the staff of more than 200 prosecutors is among his highest priorities. "The biggest change at the district attorney's office in Dallas County is that it is going to look like Dallas County," he said. "For a long time the leadership in the district attorney's office has all been white men." He seems genuinely surprised that his precedent-setting election victory has gained so much attention. "Somebody's telling me every day that this is a big deal," he said. "I just didn't figure that it was that big of a deal. It was going to happen one day.... I actually think it's kind of a disgrace that it took this long to happen." WEECOME! 8r LESSONS AGES 10-ADULT LEARN HOW TO PAINT!
