ZOELLER FUNERAL HOME Funerals & Cremations By Jessica Sanders StaffWriter Bulverde City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to pay $4 a day to jurors in municipal trials, compensating them for the first time. The city's financial director, Ginger Hof-stetter, said most area courts pay at least a nominal fee for residents who respond to summons and serve on juries. "It didn't seem fair for us to bring people in and not compensate them," she said. Bulverde has held one jury trial scheduled in the past six months and there is another trial scheduled for January, Hof-stetter said. New Braunfels and Garden Ridge currently pay jurors, as do the justice of the peace courts. Councilwoman Cindy Cross said she was concerned about the cost to the city when defendants request a trial and then cancel or plead guilty after jurors are summoned. The cost of summoning or compensating jurors can be recouped by charging the defendant court costs, City Attorney Frank Garza said. Susan Dvorak, Comal County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace, said county justice of the peace courts pay $6 per day to people who show up to jury selection and $16 to those who are selected. "If we summon about 100 people, about half will send back cards that show they are eligible and dien about 30 will actually show up," she said. "We spend just under $200 of the county's money each time a jury is called." Most cities in the area pay jurors between $5 and $8 a day. County courts are required by state law to pay $ 16 for the first day and $40 for each additional day of trial. The stipend of $4 was recommended because it was the lowest rate found in the San Antonio area, Garza said. Also during the meeting: Mayor Sarah Stevick named the members of the seven-person animal control committee. The members, appointed by the mayor, are responsible for reviewing die city's animal control ordinance. Councilwoman Cindy Cross was appointed to the land planner selection committee. The council voted to amend the city's personnel rules to change the number of pay periods from 24 to 26 pay dates a year. On Dec. 16, a Canyon Lake home was visited by Christmas burglars. According to the Comal County sheriff's office, burglars broke into a house in the 3000 block of Lakeview Drive, in the Canyon Lake Hills Subdivision, sometime between 2 and 4:43 a.m. The burglars raided the presents under the Christmas tree and hauled off some of the loot, while leaving the house in disarray. Deputies believe the burglars left when die homeowners woke up to get ready for work. Evidence indicates that the thieves, who might be from the area near the Canyon Lake Hills subdivision, left on foot. Comal County Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information about anyone in the area who recently has acquired a black Easton compound bow and arrows, or a brown and blonde wood Martin Sigma guitar. Crime Stoppers also is offering a reward in connection with a Dec. 18 theft at Smithson Valley Middle School.
