The building the Bugle Boy is housed in was once a World War II Army barrack moved from nearby Bastrop and used as a Sons of Hermann Lodge for many years. When it came time to name the venue, owner Lane Gosnay kept things traditional. "It seemed natural to stay with the theme of the 1940's," she explained. "And thus we took the name from the 1940 hit song, 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.' After I bought the building, people started bringing me old memorabilia like uniforms, old sheet music and magazines." It was though fate intervened in helping Gosnay find the Bugle Boy and see her dream of opening a unique music venue become a reality. "Like any music venue, it is very difficult financially to keep the doors open," Gosnay said. "You never know what you will be competing against, or how much you will draw that evening." The Bugle Boy is located at 1051N. Jefferson Street (Hwy. 77) in La Grange and is open only on the days a performance is scheduled. The Bugle Boy is a listening room, so no talking is allowed during the performance. Cell phones and pagers must be turned offr 'Imagine going to a concert and actually being able to hear the singer without some obnoxious drunk screaming at the top of their lungs. The artists that perform at the Bugle Boy are so appreciative they often extend their allotted playing time simply because they are having such a good time. The first "Live at the Bugle Boy" CD was released to celebrate the venue's recent success. It is an amazing 17-track compilation featuring highlights from the many intimate concerts held at this unique venue. Artists such as Shelley King, A.J. Crbce, Sloan Wainwright, Jimi Lee, Vienna Teng, Dana Cooper and Amy Speace-just to name few-all turn in remarkable performances. This is a must-have CD. The latest CD by local musician Zack Walther and the Cronkites is titled "Death of Rodger," and although it contains only six tunes, it is easily one of the best collections of songs I've ever heard. The new album proves that Walther can move flawlessly from ballad to rocker and never miss a beat. After years fronting Rodger Wilko, Walther decided to go solo. Walther and his band play every Wednesday night this month at the Tavern in the Gruene, beginning tonight. In addition to their four Wednesday night shows, the band is scheduled to perform on Jan. 20. Walther's new full-length CD,"CanYouHearMe Now," will be ready soon, according to the band's Web site, Eating right By Ann Cousin Correspondent 'Tis the season for putting all those New Year's resolutions to the test. For most people, the promise to eat healthier and exercise more is at the top of the list. The holidays are for eating and drinking things that we perhaps would not have otherwise. We did it all in the name of celebrating the holidays. Now that the holidays have come and gone, it's time to get down to business and put those resolutions into action. While it might seem a daunting task, it really doesn't have to be that difficult. Our supermarkets are brimming with the freshest winter produce of the season, so whipping up healthy dishes can . be simple. What we choose to eat can have a direct effect on our ability to enjoy life to its fullest. This is true for everyone, despite age and health. Food choices play a major role in promoting and maintaining good health, as well as preventing many chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. What does healthy eating really mean? In April of 2005, the United States Department of Agriculture released a new food guidance system - MyPyramid-based on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. According to the USDA, MyPyramid "symbolizes a personalized approach to healthy eating and physical activity." Photos submitted These recipes for Roman-Style Chicken and Roasted Green Beans with Shallots and Hazelnuts would add a flavorful boost to the common New Year's resolution of eating healthier foods. ROASTED GREEN BEANS WITH SHALLOTS AND HAZELNUTS ROMAN-STYLE CHICKEN From: Food Network From: Food Network 1 pound green beans, trimmed 3Tbsp. olive oil 4 shallots, thinly 'rSaltana freshly ground black pep per 1/4 cup hazelnuts, toasted and coarsely chopped 1Tbsp. finely >w,.i.w^ .chappedlemon zest. 2Tbsp. chopped  fresh parsley leaves 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes 1/2 cup white wine 1Tbsp. fresh thyme leaves 1 tsp..fresh oregano leaves 2Tbsp. capers , . .. ., , 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves Preheat oven to 425 degrees.Toss the green beans in a large baking dish with the oil and shallots and season with salt and pepper. Roast in the oven until just cooked through, about 15 to 18 minutes. Combine the hazelnuts, zest and parsley  in a small bowl.Transfer green beans to a platter and sprinkle with the hazelnut mixture. Makes four to six servings. 4 skinless chicken breast halves, with ribs 2 skinless chicken thighs, with bones 1/2 tsp. salt, plus 1 teaspoon 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper, plus 1 teaspoon V4cuDoHy^j^i,............... Xredbell; pepper, sliced 1 yellow bell pepper! sliced 3 ounces prosciutto, chopped Season the chicken with 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp. pepper. In a heavy, large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. When the oil is not, cook the chicken until browned on both sides. Remove from the pan and set aside. Keeping the same pan over medium heat, add the peppers and prosciutto and cook until the peppers have browned and the prosciutto is crisp, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for one minute. Add the tomatoes, wine and herbs. Using a wooden spoon, scrape the browned bits off the bot torn of the pan. Return the chicken to the pan, add the stock and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the chicken is cooked through, about 20 to 30 minutes. If serving immediately, add the capers and,the parsley. Stir to combine and serve. If making ahead of time, transfer the chicken and sauce to a storage container and cool before refrigerating.The next day, reheat the chicken to a simmer over medium neat. Stir in the capers and the parsley ana serve. Makes six servings. Some desserts require no more than 5 simple ingredients Judith Davis New Braunfels This recipe was created in self defense, because the children would inform me at 9 p.m. that they needed cookies - usually two to three dozen-the next day for a school event. The boys loved these cookies so much that they didn't mind volunteering me. They are easy, quick and great with milk. Sue Covington New Braunfels This recipe was given to me by my friend Jo Arnold. She always brought it to our office parties. After she left, I continued the tradition. It is easy and everyone loves it. FORTYNINERS From: Judith Davis, New Braunfels 1 box light brown sugar � Confectioner's sugar for 4 eggs decoration 2 cups dry biscuit mix 1 cup pecans (optional) Pour sugar into a mixing bowl, then add the eggs and beat until foamy. Add 2 cups of biscuit mix and slowly beat it until it's thoroughly mixed. If desired, add the Eecans. Place the mixture in a greased aking pan and bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until its golden brown and pulls away at the sides of the pan.Take out of the oven and sprinkle with confectioner's sugar and cut into squares. Yields about two tdthree dozen. r- - .(t.,i&Mmk. -I 1 . fr i t v. r si -) Judith Davis DUMP CAKE From: Sue Covington, New Braunfels 1 large can crushed pineapple (do not drain) 1 large can cherry pie filling 1 box yellow cake mix 1 stick margarine or butter, cut into bits 1/2 cup chopped nuts Layer the ingredients in the order listed in a greased 9-inch by 13-inch baking dish.
