CANYON LAKE THE LAKE STARTZVILLE SATTLER FISCHER HANCOCK Woman accused of arson to face charges Brenda Carlton By Jessica Sanders Staff Writer It looked like Brenda Carlton was gone for good, but the Katy resident is returning to Comal County to face arson charges. "She knew she was wanted, but she just beat feet to get somewhere else," said Wayne Ellington, Comal County deputy fire marshal. "1 never thought we'd actually see her again." Carlton, who was wanted in connection with a 2005 Canyon Lake arson case, fled the country before an arrest warrant could he issued. Ellington said she was rumored to be hiding in the Middle East, but bringing the 48-year-old back to Texas was easier than investigators thought. Sgt. Max Wommack, warrants division commander at the Comal County sheriff's office, received a call from U.S. Customs on Dec. 2] informing him that Carlton was boarding a flight in Amsterdam bound for Atlanta. Customs agents told Wommack that Atlanta Matsfield International airport personnel were performing a security check of all passengers before flights arrived, and found that Carlton had a warrant from Comal County. "They asked if the warrant was still good, and I said, 'It sure is,'" Wommack said. Before the flight left the Netherlands, Wommack agreed to have Carlton extradited to Comal County. Carlton was greeted upon arrival at the airport by Atlanta police officers who took her into custody. Wommack said she had not arrived at Comal County Jail as of Tuesday. Carlton and her former boyfriend Donald Zaskoda, 44, were indicted on Nov. 9, 2005, for the arson of a cabin at the Mountain Breeze Campground, at 201 Mountain Breeze Camp. Ellington, who investigated the case, said Carlton and Zaskoda were staying at Mountain Breeze on May 9, 2005, during an annual motorcycle rally. "They were very insistent that they stay in Cabin 5," Ellington said. "It just happens that Cabin 5, it was the WEDNESDAY NIGHT FORUM Sponsored by the Comal County Unitarian Universalists and presented without charge to all interested persons The program for January 10: PAULA PEBSWORTH "ROOTS & SHOOTS" Roots & Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute's international environmental and humanitarian program for young people. We just get lucky once in a while, and this is one of those times." - Wayne Ellington Comal County deputy fire marshal same cabin that her other boyfriend died in during the same motorcycle rally the previous year." According to an offense report from the Comal County sheriff's office, Lylbern Franklin Overluif was found dead in Cabin 5 on May 9, 2004. The report did not document the cause of the 45-year-old's death. Ellingtop said burn patterns and witness statements led him to believe that the fire was intentionally set. Zaskoda, who also is charged with arson, turned himself in on June 22, 2006, and has cooperated with the investigation. His case is awaiting trial. A $25,000 bond has been set on Carlton's case. Ellington said he did not know when her case would be brought to trial. Wommack said it is not unusual for the warrants division to find fugitives several months after a crime is committed. "There's no expiration on a warrant," he said. "If people renew their driver's license or get pulled over in a traffic stop, the warrant will show up." However, Ellington said that Carlton's return was a welcome surprise for investigators. "Since she skipped out of the country we figured she'd be really hard to get," he said. "We just get lucky once in a while, and this is one of those times." inn Decor & More ^ "From Your Door to Your Floor" Order Custom Valentine arrangements today!
