New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - January 10, 1993, New Braunfels, Texas Page 6AHerald-Zeitung New Braunfels, Texas Sunday, January 10, 1993 Krueger_ Continued from Page 1A Barton said. “He’s 'redistributed the pie’.” Krueger, however, disagreed with Barton and his assessment of Texas voters and said that President-elect Bill Clinton’s election showed that Texas’ ideology may be changing, and explained some of the reasons for his appointment. “The Republicans just had a president receive the smallest percentage of votes of any incumbent president in 80 years,” Krueger said. “I think that sends a pretty strong message.” Krueger said Richards appointed him to the senate with the understanding that he would take an active role in high-tech issues, such as NASA and the super-colliding superconductor, as well as economic issues such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). “I’ve just been appointed to the energy committee,” Krueger said, and pointed out that he would be meeting with President-elect Bill •Clinton and Mexican President Carlos Salinas during NAFTA talks. Krueger    emphasized    the importance of NAFTA not only as a viable economic growth plan, but as an agreement that would stimulate education and worker retraining programs.    And although he conceded that some Americans would lose their jobs because of NAFTA, he feels confident that the benefits far outweigh the costs. “Those workers who lose their jobs, we can take and re-train,” Krueger said. “It’s important to realize that we need to have a strong educational base to support this change and to foster economic growth and prosperity, and also give people a sense of dignity and selfrespect.” Krueger feels that it will take a bipartisan effort to stimulate the economy and re-instill pride and confidence in the American economy. He added that he thinks Texans want a senator with a direct link to the White House. Democratic leaders, including Bentsen himself, are taking the opportunity since Krueger’s appointment to accuse the Republican Party of being divided and indecisive because of the three Krueger challengers. The San Antonio Exprcss-Ncws reported Bentsen as saying, “lf you want to talk about division, look at the Republican Party. Look at the number of candidates who have said they are going to run.” But Republican officials with Fields’, Barton’s and Hutchison’s offices don’t view it that way. Toy Wood, press representative in Fields’ office said the decision by the three candidates to run was arrived at by each candidate independently. “It makes things tough within the party,” Wood said, “but our goal (in Fields’ office) is to identify our supporters and go from there.” Fields is expected to officially announce his candidacy by Jan. 13. Karl Rove, Hutchison’s consultant, said the fact that three Republicans are running does not represent a divided party, but rather the abundance of quality candidates. “Look at who’s running,” Rove said. “We have a lot of god candidates.” Rove continued by saying that indecisiveness was more a factor of the Democrats than the Republicans. “Bob Krueger was Gov. Richards’ eighth or ninth choice,” Rove said, listing some of the governor’s first choices as former San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros, former Lieutenant Governor William Hobby, and Rep. John Bryant of Dallas. “Gov. Richards went to Bill Clinton and told him the Democrats were in trouble in Texas because they didn’t have a strong .enough candidate. This is a pathetic display of the weakness of the Democratic Party,” Rove said. Despite challenges by Republicans on his record, Krueger maintains that he is as viable a candidate as anyone. At this time there are no Democratic candidates, but it is expected that former attorney general Jim Mattox will announce his candidacy.
