Having moved to Texas in 1966 and calling at Happy Souls in Seguin and Trailing Squares in New Braunfels, the I laveses moved hack to Kansas in the late ‘60s.
“During that time, I went to full-time calling,’’ Jim I laves said. "I was also selling these side swing mount
tripod speaker stands I invented. I was the inventor. the pans maker, the assembler, shipper and cashier.
“I would call dances at night and build these during the day, lim Hayes said. “We also started making boot scrapers for the Shep-ler’s Western Stores over the Midwest, which lasted about eight years and did very well. 1 had to have something to do during the day, since I called every night somewhere.”
Shirley Hayes, wearing homemade petticoats, would often fill in for missing people and dance the men or women’s part while Jim Hayes called.
“It is a lot of fun and good exercise.” Shirley Hayes said.

Together, the Hayeses purchased an old high school building in Aurora, Kan. and opened a square dancing hall called The French Quarters in 1981.
“Square dancing creates a family,’’ Jim Hayes said. “Everybody meets you at the doors and hugs you like they haven't seen you in years.”
The Hayeses returned to Texas in the late ‘80s and called at Shirts *N’ Skirts in Georgetown.
“Square dancing is all over the world,” Jim Hayes said. “They were first connected with (Air Force) and Army bases where the Americans were. It evolved from back in the Medieval days when parents would play with their kids.

the United States, a melting pot of cultures got together and created a square of people,’’ Jim Hayes said.
His family has lived in 13 homes, owned 15 cars — two of which had more than 300,000 miles on them — been in four minor accidents and received very few speeding tickets.
“We’ve traveled a lot,” Jim Hayes said. “But I enjoy it because it’s fun, and I’m a pretty lucky person because I ’m a pretty good caller. We still used 45 (rpm) records because I’m too old to change.”
Although a lot has changed in square dancing, Jim Hayes said the basic choreography remains the same.
"Modern Western square dancing was so simple hack then,” Jim Hayes said. “Now, there are over 4,000 different calls, but everything is done by beats of music. Square dancing was down for a while, but now it’s
making its way back up.” Jim Hayes said the economy and fast-paced life of modern families have competed with square dancing.
"People have to work so hard to raise a family,” Jim Hayes said. “Everyone is so busy now, and square dancing takes a lot of commitment.”
He does not plan to retire any time soon.
“You know, midwestern callers are considered the best in the world,” Jim Hayes said with a laugh. “I guess that really includes Texas, too.”
Jim Hayes will host square dancing lessons on Fridays, starting today, from 7:30-9 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
A regular square dance will be held from 9-9:30 p.m.
