New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - January 6, 2001, New Braunfels, Texas Saturday, January 6, 2001 — Herald-Zeitung — Page 7 A Friedens United Church of Christ honors volunteer fire departments Friedens United Church of Christ recently honored two local volunteer fire departments with a special ceremony. Jeff Bormann led the congregation in recognizing the York Creek Volunteer Fire and the Geronimo Volunteer Fire departments. Bormann shared some 1997-1998 firefighting statistics and told the congregation that of the 1,082,500 firefighters in the United States, approximately 75 percent are volunteers, of the 31,000 fire departments nationwide, 88 percent are “mostly” or “all” volunteer and that volunteer fire departments protect about 41 percent of the United States population. The Geronimo VFD was organized in 1980 and currently has 20 active firefighters protecting an area of about 50 square miles and 5000 to 7000 people. They respond to 12-15 calls per month, including both primarily fire and first-response type medical care. The station is located on State Highway 123 in Geronimo. Current officers are President Larry Schwarlose, Vice President Roger Bading, Fire Chief Waymon Krueger, First Assistant Chief Larry Hermann, Second Assistant Chief Dwayne Thormalen, Secretary Nick Evola, Treasurer Don Hartmann and Chaplain George Hartmann. Trustee^ are Kenneth Harborth, Darrell Friesenhahn and Don Smith. The Ladies Auxiliary has seven active members including President Nancy Krueger, Vice President Marilu Bading and Secretary/Treasurer Pam Hartmann. The York Creek VFD was organized in 1984 and currently has 25 members, 15 of whom are firefighter volunteers protecting an area of about 65 square miles and approximately 10,000 people from three stations in Zorn, Staples and Redwood. They respond-to an average of 20 calls per month, including fire emergencies, first-response medical assistance and false alarms. Current officers are President Leo Whitten, Vice President Dominquez Alva, Fire Chief Roy Wood, First Assistant Chief Mary Wood, Secretary Helen Walters, Treasurer Eileen Whitten and Trustees Ernest Hartmann, Sylvia Engler, Vice President Helen Walters, Secretary Lillian Castillo and Treasurer Irene Hartman. Carolyn Bading shared some firefighting history with the group. Historically, the volunteer firefighters concept is 352 years old. It started in 1648 when Peter Stuyvesant, Governor of New York Colony, appointed a group of four fire wardens to inspect chimneys of the thatched-roof houses and to levy a fine of three guilders for each unswept chimney. The money received from fines was used to import leather buckets, hooks and laddars to be put to use by concerned citizens to protect the community from destructive fires. After the ceremony, some members of the congregation took rides on the fire trucks.
