starting over For a Canyon Lake woman who celebrated with about 80 others at Faust Hotel 2000 is a time to stick to convictions and struggle through hard decisions The youth who ushered in the new millennium at J R Gymnastics likely will approach the new year with joy enthusiasm and maybe a few flips All three groups and others in New Braunfels and Comal County experienced New Years Eve uniquely and safely emergency personnel said When the clock struck mid night streetlights continued to illuminate a clear dark sky water was plentiful and no terrorists threatened violence Inside The the secret of living to a ripe old age is hard work And she might be on to something Sanchez who spends her days cleaning house cooking crocheting and working out side in the yard celebrated her 99th birthday on Saturday See Taxpayers upset with CISD change in bond plans Trustees balk at Borgfeld property looking for site east of 281 BY HEATHER TODD Staff Writer A storm is brewing in southwestern Comal County over the future site of a new elemen tary school in the Creek area Comal Independent School District admin istrators are looking for property on the west and east side of 281 near Cibolo Creek to build a new elementary school after board mftmbers rejected a site on Borgfeld Road in a split vote earlier this month But a group of patrons in the Timberwood Park subdivision in CISD in Bexar County on the west side 281 said building the school on the east side of 281 would go against the 1999 bond issue promoted by the district Board splits on property The new 800student capacity elementary school is part of a million bond package approved by voters in May As part of phase one bond projects three new elementary schools will be built through out the district During a Dec 17 meeting trustees voted 4 3 against buying a 20acre site along Borgfeld Road on the west side of 281 in Bexar County for onei of the new elementary schools Trustees John Clay Nick Nichols and Robert Loop voted to buy the land Trustees Dora Gonzales Lester Jonas John Bertelsen and board president Dan Krueger voted against it District officials now are looking at property on both sides of 281 including two pieces of property east of 281 on Stahl Lane and Smithson Valley Road north of FarmtoMar ket863 Taking sides Marlene Keller a Timberwood Park resident and member of the districts bond oversight committee said board members made a ver bal contract with voters that the school would be built on the west side near Timberwood Park It was stated verbally and stated at meet ings that it would be in the Timberwood Park area It was certainly understood that was where the school was Now Keller and other residents said they were planning to post fliers encouraging patrons to address the issue at the next board meeting Trustees could discuss proposed property for the new elementary school when they meet 6 Jan 13 at Bill Brown Elementary School 20410 Texas 46 West The location of future schools was not included in the bond ballot language In March 1999 trustees approved a recommendation outlining three general areas for the new schools 281 and Cibolo Creek Farmto Candidates filing for spots on March ballots Deadline is 6 on Monday BY HEATHER TODD Staff Writer With just a day before the filing deadline 10 Comal County resi dents have placed their names on the March 2000 primary ballot Local candidates have until 6 Monday to file officially with political parties for the March 2000 primaries Positions up for election in 2000 include all four constables Precincts 1 and 3 county com missioners Comal County tax assessorcollector sheriff and state district bench in the 22nd Judicial District The 2000 primaries will be March 14 The general election is Nov 7 Democratic chairman Atana cio Campos said he would be available to accept applications until 6 Monday at 576 Comal Ave Candidates also can contact Campos at 6201515 Republican chairman Don Hensz can be contacted at Hensz said six candidates for Precinct 1 county commission er Precincts 2 3 and 4 county constables and sheriifhave filed with the local Republican party The latest filings including Pet 3 county constable Jim Hanley and Pet 4 county constable can didate Ben Scroggin Hanley who filed Dec 17 took office as the Pet 3 constable in 1994 to fill an unexpired term and was elected to office in 1996 Precinct 3 covers the Bul Branch area Scroggin who is a retired senior Army officer filed for the Pet 4 constable position on Dec 28 The Pet 4 position serves the Canyon Lake area Scroggin has lived in the Canyon Lake area for 11 years and said he filed because he wanted to continue to serve the community As a retired Army officer I served my country and I want to be a public servant to my precinct I am totally dedicated to the com munity and what better way to serve the community than as a he said Scroggin will run against Republican candidate Wiley Queen for the constable position in the March 2000 primary Queen a retired Canyon Lake resident filed Dec 9 for the con stable position Republican incumbent Ed Mullins who was elected in 1992 has not announced whether he would seek reelection Other Republican candidates include Pet 1 county commis sioner Jack Dawson who filed Dec 8 Pet 2 constable Lester Leissner and Comal County Sheriff Bob Holder who both filed Dec 15 Dawson was elected in 1996 Leissner took office in 1994 to fill an unexpired term He was elected to office in 1996 His position represents the New Braunfels area Holder was elected to office in 1996 ;
