New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 25, 1993, New Braunfels, Texas THURSDAY, FEBRUARY SS, 1903 HERALD-ZEITUNG 9 Rangers oushoot Buffs but still drop 2-0 decision The Smithson Valley Rangers continued to slide out of playoff contention Tuesday night with a 2-0 loss to the Clemens Buffaloes, who are sneaking up on Canyon for the third spot. The Rangers outshot the Buffaloes 24-4, and spent almost the entire second half on the Clemens end, but could not get the ball in the net Head Coach Larry Schaffer said the team just seems to have hit the wall offensively. "We pretty much dominated play and they only had four shots," Schaffer said. "The bad news in the first half was we only shot two ourselves, but we dominated the second half. They only had it on our end four times. "We’re just not generating anything offensively. We control the* ball real well until the last 20 yards and we have trouble finding someone capable of being a consistent scorer." Schaffer said it’s hard to see the team play well and come up empty. "It’s frustrating because we dominate play, don’t give up much defensively, yet we still come up on the short end," he said. "To be truthful, I don’t see it stopping. We’re playing as hard as we can play. We’re basically just limited from getting to the next level. “With so many young players, we need to have a good offseason and get some people some valu- Smithson Valley's Lath Middleton moves the ball upfield in the Rangers’ 2-0 loss to Clemens Tuesday night. The Rangers are taking the weekend off with an off day Friday, but will come back next Tuesday against district-leading New Braunfels at 7:30 p.m. Cougars take uninspired win over Boerne, prepare for Mules By JODI MCDONALD Speolal lo th# Herald-ZsHung "Uninspired" was the way Head Soccer Coach Danny Bueno described Canyon’s 2-0 victory over Boerne Tuesday night Although Canyon is now 9-3-1,5-3-0 in district, Bueno felt that his team was far too casual in their handling of the Greyhounds. The Cougars dropped from No. 9 to No. IO in the area rankings, but still hold a one-game lead over Clemens for third in District 52. Clemens put a halt to Smithson Valley's bid for third with a 2-0 victory over the Rangers Tuesday night Canyon outshot the Greyhounds 20-5 by the final whistle, but only two could find the net. Four times the ball bounced off the crossbar denying the Cougars potential goals. Eddie Elizondo finally focused on goal after receiving a Tyler Fumey cross. Elizondo picked up the ball in front of the net and drilled it home, putting the first Cougar score up in lights. "Mentally we weren’t ready to play, but I guess I should be happy with a win," explained Bueno. Defensively, the Cougars claimed their fourth shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Alex Pozenel, Bryan Yuras, Jason Hawkins, Curtis Arens, and team captain Mack Mills received rave revues for holding the Greyhounds scoreless, while sophomore Seen Men was praised for his midfield actions, along with Jason Barucky and Joseph Schuetze. "I thank God for Sean Merz," said Bueno. "I don’t believe he’s had a bad game yet The defense has saved us a couple of times this year—-they are doing a super job." The skills of sophomore Vince Bueno were responsible for the final Cougar goal. After a takedown in the box, Bueno took the penalty kick and plastered the net to put the Cougars up 2-0. Bueno has recorded 19 goals for the season. Canyon’s JV smothered the Greyhounds in a 6-2 win. Chris Cholico and David Jara each nailed two points, while Chris White and Sean Levine added scores five and six. Coach Bueno is preparing his team both mentally and physically for the Friday night rematch of Canyon and Alamo Heights. Although the Mules shut down the Cougars in their last meeting, Canyon was able to hold them to a 0-0 tie at halftime. Bueno has been encouraging his team to give the game a full 80 minutes of effort, hoping to carry the first-half enthusiasm over into the final 40 minutes. The Canyon and Alamo Heights showdown will be held at Cougar stadium Friday night and promises to be an action-filled contest JV begins at 5:30, varsity takes the field at 7:30. Unicorns Continued from I "I was pleased with the way they (the Unicorns) waited patiently," said Head Coach Bob Rodriguez. “They were in the right spots tonight, the passing was good, and the attitude was good. Rodrigues applauded the play of Mikey Bustos, Ryder McDonald, and Reed Wingate, adding that he felt Omar Hernandez "had one of his best games all season." Hernandez was the sole Unicom on the scoring end the first half. Just 3:15 past the starting whistle, Hernandez worked his way up the midfield line, stopped long enough to glance at the Antler goalie, and sent the ball out of Ute keeper's reach for the first Unicom score. Four minutes later, Hernandez sneaked up the near sideline and into the middle to land the ball into the far right comer of the net Hie half ended 2-0 Unicorns. Although Tivy had lined it’s defense with tall and aggressive players, the Unicorns had no trouble cracking the line the second half, as they averaged a goal each third shot.
