BRYAN ADAMS Sports Editor Coming off of its first trip to the Region Quarterfinals in school history this past sea the excitement sur rounding the Smithson ley baseball team has reached an alltime The first seven batters in the Rangers lineup are returning the top four in the rotation saw varsity action a year ago and the defense up the middle is packed with Were not going to be lack ing Smithson Val ley head coach Matt Gustafson In the 15 years that Ive this is by far the best team that Ive ever Leading the way on the mound will be senior right hander who has already signed a letter of intent to play at the Univer sity of Texas next Reininger has good command of his pitches and his fastball tops out in the low Coach Gus stresses throw ing strikes more than any Reininger He just tells us to throw strikes and let our defense We have an awesome If our pitchers throw I have confidence in my defense to make the plays that need to be The rest of the rotation includes sophomore Chris senior Cody who also starts in center field and plans to play at Texas Tech next fall and Clint Catcher Kyle Man dlebaum will call the pitches behind the plate when hes not The Rangers have 16 of 22 players listed Rangers 2001 SMITHSON VALLEY BASEBALL ROSTER Player 1 Chad Copeland 2B 2 Ryan Yates 3 Blake Boldt 4 Scott Taege 5 Warren Sims 6 Robert Golden SS 7 Ryan Byer 8 Chris Van Kleef 9 Michael Pawelek 10 Dustin Shipman 3B 11 Chris Dabbs 12 CodyPyle 14 Kyle Mandlebaum 16 Tyson Roll 17 Jeff Schoggins OF 18 Reininger 19 RyanBruner 21 Andrew Woodchick SS 22 Clint Taggert 24 Clint Haney 25 Cody Fuller 26 Brent Dawson as possible 1 think we have four pitch ers who can beat anybody in the Mandlebaum Clint Taggert and Chris Dabbs are as good as anybody in the We have one of the best pitch ing staffs in the When Reininger is not pitching hes playing second Also playing second base will be Tyson Chad Copeland and Blake shortstop Robert Golden leads a Ranger infield witKtw6 ifresh faces at the 1 think more than anything were much improved as far as pitching Golden Its really going to be tough to beat any one of those Our defense is solid all the way around and our hit CHRIS Canyons Thomas Keresztury 44 backs up against Smithson Valleys Jecon Brown during the Cougars season finale at The Cougars play Uvalde at today in a first round playoff game at Southwest High School in San JESSIE Senior Kyle Mandelbaum warms up with sophomore Cody Pyle during a recent scrimmage at Smithson Valley High School The Rangers open the season at 7 Thursday against San Antonio OConnor at ting is actually going to be better than its ever Joining Fuller out field are returning starters Ryan Yates and Ryan Defensively were inexpe rienced at first and Those are the only two spots we had to fill from last years Gustafson Both of those kids are playing out of position Every other posi vlfeel very good Ryan Yates has an extremely strong arm in Ryan Byer will probably play college ball I think the key defensively is what we do on the Michael Dustin Shipman and Clint Haney will battle for playing time at third Chris Van Cody Ryan Bruneiand Brent Dawsort will share first Offensively the Rangers are packed with power Fuller said that wont discourage them from manu facturing runs with bunts and speed on the Recently weve become a strong offensive Fuller Coach Gus came in four years ago and we started pW duces One through five in the lineup can hit home We have a lot of Its not just home but its driving people in and hit ting the See Canyon set to tangle with Uvalde BY BRYAN ADAMS Sports Editor As the only Comal County basketball team to make the the Canyon Cougars prepare to take on the Uvalde Coyotes in the first round at today at Southwest High School in San Canyon 1214 64 in District 274A closed out the regular season this past Tuesday with a 4841 win over Smithson Valley to claim the final playoff spot in the our last few practices havent been that Canyon head coach Kenny Rotzler The bug1 hit us again and Monday was the first day we had everybody back for Wednesday we kind of took a day We shot around a lit tle bit and watched some Thursday and Friday we had short practices because we were shorthand Hopefully well be focused and ready come game Playoffs PROBABLE STARTERS CANYON Player 23 James Wetz PG 33 Steven Keresztury SG 10 Chris Brockman SF 14 DanOrth PF 44 Thomas Keresztury C UVALDE Player Trevino PG Josh Moore SG Matt Salazar Wing Robert Dulin P Mark Williams P Tickets available at door The Coyotes finished as runnerups in District 284A with a 1911 record overall and 73 record in These past few practices have been different for said Uvalde head coach Kim ble who is in his sixth season at Uvalde and prepares for his first playoff T dont think weve had exceptionally great but weve been really focused on what we need to The Coyotes offense and defense is fueled by 6foot8 post Mark Williams who aver ages points and nine rebounds a game this Canyon counters with 6 255pound center Thomas Keresztury who leads the Cougars in scoring and rebounding this Williams does not have quite as big of a body as Tom but hes definitely a scor ing threat in the Rot zler Hes probably one of the better post men weve seen this Hes a lot like the post man from Tivy Ben McCain but not quite as Well see if Tom can guard him by If he starts hurting well try to front him and get some help from the Uvalde plays an uptempo game by pushing the ball up the floor and sticking with a fullcourt press on on the other relies on a offense and suffocates oppo nents with a 23 zone half court The big question on every ones mind Can we dictate Rotzler We have to handle their Teams that want uptempo games try to get you stretched out from baseline to If we can handle their presi not turn the ball over and take our time with thes well be Defen sively we need to get back in transition and not let them run on We have to make them be patient attacking our halfcourt McHone said its the Cougars stingy defense that concerns him the most going into todays Canyon does what they do extremely well play rebound and get the ball to McHone
