New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 20, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Religious Focus Page** Heralci-Zeitung, New Braunfels, Texas Friday, February 20,1987 Church schedules lecture ; The congregation of First Church of Christ Scientist has sponsored public lectures since 1971. • Guest lecturer Mrs. Olga M. Chaffee, C.S.B. of Houston, will discuss “It Takes a Lamb to Slay the Wolf” this week. In the late 1800s, Christian Science lectures were introduced during great public interest in the new denomination which was founded in Boston in 1879. Newspaper reports regarding adherents’ practice of Christian healing were widespread. The lectures offered the public the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of what Christian Science teaches and believes. The setting were public and the event was informational rather than proselytic. Over the years, the lectures have retained the same basic purpose — providing the public an opportunity to learn something about a church with a long history on the local religious scene The first Christian Science Church was founded here in 1903. This year, the lecturers are focusing on three areas of concern: violence, breakdown of the family and health. The New Braunfels congregation has scheduled Mrs. Chaffee’s lecture to begin at 3 p.m. Feb. 22 at Holiday Inn, 1051 Interstate 35 E. There is no admission fee for the one-hour program and no collection will be taken. Mrs. Chaffee is active in the denomination’s ministry of Christian healing as a Christian Science practitioner. (A practitioner gives his or her full time to the public practice of Christian Science healing through prayer.) Mrs. Chaffee's lecture on lawlessness will include accounts of physical healing that have come about as the result of prayer and a spiritual understanding of God. The public is invited to attend the lecture Feb. 22. Child care will be available. Briefly Mrs. Olga M. Chaffee Methodist youth to serve dinner The youth of First Methodist Church will serve a spaghetti dinner Feb. 22 from noon to I p.m. at the church. Adult plates will be $5. Plates for children between the ages of 6 and 12 will be $2.50 and children under the age of 6 will be free. SMU choir to perform in Seguin church The Southern Methodist University Choir of Dallas will perform Feb. 28 at First United Methodist Church of Seguin. The concert at the church at 710 N. Austin St., Seguin, will begin at 7 p.m. and include a variety of choral literature. It will begin with a setting of Psalm 98 by the 20th century German composer Hugo Distler. Compositions of choir conductor Dr. Lloyd Pfautsch will be sung in a group of Biblical scenes. The first half of the program will conclude with "The Twelve” by Sir William Walton. The second half of the concert will include songs by Johannes Brahms, "Trois Chansons” by Claude Debussy, choral dances from the opera "Gloriana” by Benjamin Britten and a setting of seven aphorisms by Pfautsch. The public is invited to the concert. A free-will offering will be received. Churches set up aid for undocumented aliens WASHINGTON (AP) - Churches across the country are setting up operations to guide thousands of undocumented aliens through the complicated process of seeking to become legal residents under new federal immigration law. Monsignor Nicholas DiMarzio, director of the U. S. Catholic Con ference’s Migration and Refugee Service, says most of the nation’s Roman Catholic dioceses have appointed ‘legalization directors.” He estimates that up to 3 million people will apply for legal status under the law. which allows it for those who can prove that they have lived in this country since before Jan. 1,1982. Episcopal President Bishop Edmond L. Browning has dispatched information on the new law to bishops across the country, and a national "working group on migration concerns” was set up to coordinate guiding of applicants. Similar steps were under way by Church World Service offices, which handle refugee work for most major Protestant denominations Applications for legal residence are not to be accepted by the Immigration and Naturalization Ser- See BRIEFS, Page 7A Worship at the church of your choice Local- Assemblee De Dios (Spanish Assembly of God) 2S5 W Commerce St. Sunday school 5 30 p.m.; evangelistic service 6 30 p.m., Saturday 6 30 p m Bible Baptist Church, 123S Erven berg Ave Sunday school IO a rn., worship ll a m and I p m .
