Canyon players watch from the bench in disbelief Tuesday night as their season came to end with an 83-73 loss to Austin McCallum at Akins High School.
“You’ve got to give our guys credit,” said Canyon coach Kenny Rotzler. “They could have come out in the second half with their heads hanging, but they didn’t. They dug down and got back in the game.”
After going into halftime down ll points, the Cougars came out looking like a different team in the third quarter. They upped the ball pressure and got into the passing lanes, forcing the Knights into turnovers. They drove the lane and got the ball inside to post Jason Grohman, who went to work down low. While McCallum was taller inside, Grohman was stronger and capitalized off his size. He posted up low on the block and opted for a simple drop step, as opposed to anything fancier. Grohman ended the night with a team-high 23 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
With two minutes left to play in the third, Canyon finally tied

up the game. There were 14 lead changes to follow, but it was McCallum who pulled away in the end.
“You should always put away a team when you have the
chance,” said McCallum coach Don Caldwell. “Especially when you are playing a team as good as Canyon you just can’t let them back in. We feel blessed to have won this game.”

A little more than a minute later, Stuart Brown’s circus kick from 15 yards away found the backside of the New Braunfels goal and stretched the lead to 4-1.
“I think the first half we were very pleased with the way we played. But, it’s frustrating to play that well the first half and then come out and not play anywhere close to what we played in the first half,” Behhng said.
Gerhardt, who was playing for the injured Ben Campos after he broke his toe during practice Monday, made 12 saves in the game on 27 Boerne shots.
“You hate to lose a senior leader, and especially somebody as solid as Ben (Campos), but like I told the kids, Chris (Gerhardt) came in and did a great job,” BehUng said. “He certainly kept us in the game the first half and really had some nice saves throughout the game.”
