New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 14, 2007, New Braunfels, Texas Page February OUR OPINION Compromise probably wont solve river issues All can agree that stamping out antisocial public intoxication and related littering are in the best interests of the New Braunfels community and the vast majority of river Will new river rules achieve any of intended effects reduce intoxication on river without affecting economy The split vote at the New Braunfels City Councils meeting Monday night could have been fairly well predicted by many who have followed the The dozens of local residents who urged the council to consider the potential impacts of the river rules adopted at the meeting were ignored by the 43 whose minds almost certainly were made up before they walked into the council Looking ahead to the we wonder what have these rules accomplished What effect will they have other than to perhaps diminish some of the crowds on the Comal River More water in the lot financially to the New Braunfels Maintaining the river as a tourist destination costs tax For this New Braunfels tax payers need to see a Weve heard legitimate complaints about the cool er rules and how they will impact many river including families who dont ever bring a beer to the Fears also have been expressed that the little softsided coolers adopted in the ordinance pose a danger to adults and The council needs to look more at the regulations it passed on The compromise it sought with these river rules divided the divided the river activities divided the residents of New Braunfels and placed an ugly spotlight on the city that is causing other Texans who liked coming here in the past to say they will think again before TODAY IN HISTORY By The Associated Press Today is lead Forces in Iraq I want to expand on the brief AP news release in the issue of the HeraldZeitung regarding David the new command er of forces in The AP article refers to him as Princetoneducated While it is true that Petraeus did receive his Masters and PhD degrees in Public Administration from Princeton University in 1985 and 1987 respectively he is a 1974 graduate of the United States in his assignments and duties in the Army rather than in his gradu ate degree While his Public Administration degrees no doubt augment his con siderable military experience in performing his new academic achievements can never replace real world Our troops are in good military hands in If only our politicians do not attempt io microman age the situation especially by threatening to cut off we about I emailed a soldier friend of mine for his impressions of the increasingly amplified Army Daniel of Grand is on his second tour in I asked him what he thinks of the growing opposition to the Writing from he says he appreci ates the freedom Americans have to but adds The American military has shown a stonecold profes sional veneer throughout the seething debate raging over Beneath that is a visceral We feel as though we have been betrayed by Dobson believes the military is being hamstrung against an enemy with no reservations or restrictions It is our overwhelming opinion that we have not been allowed to conduct the war to the fullest of our capability neither do we feel that we should pull out because of a lack of War is not a chem istry set with predetermined outcomes or With a great army matched with an equally cunning ene we find ourselves in a but winnable We do not seek results we seek total and unequivocal Its been a while since anyone spoke of Critics ask war supporters to define the Dobson makes an effort That victory is close at With nearly 80 percent of all terrorist and insurgent activity within 50 miles of the sheer thought of not tak ing out this stronghold is If we can eliminate 80 percent of terrorist the war is nearly To throw away a battle of this magnificent impor tance would be to waste the suffering and the sacrifice of American service What of the effect on the troops from antiwar remarks on the streets and in Congress Some assert it doesnt hurt troop Dobson disagrees The question has been posed to me recently what congressional resolution hurts troop morale the No doubt we would be happy to come home But the thought is bitter Most service members would tell you the same thing there is no honor in and there is no honor in what the Democrats have It stings me to the core to think that Americans would rather sell their honor than fight for a Those of us who fight for peace know all too well that peace has a very bloody price To make his he tells a story An army once marched on the great city of The fearing for the future of the Roman sent the Empires greatest warrior to the camp of the general to negotiate the cessation of After several hours with the he asked the warrior just how much he loved Without the warrior rose and walked to a fire and stuck his right hand in the flames until it was completely burned the warrior said is how much all Romans love The struck with said that if all Romans should have the same spirit as this he could not afford war with and so retreated back to his I fear that when questioned of their love for many Americans would shy from the It breaks our hearts to see our which was more of a Union on 2001 to such petty No longer are we one out of but have fallen from one into We on the front lines long to see the purple raging hatred for our enemies that we saw on the morning of the We long to see America seeking victory as much as we Dobson has another wish beyond the desire to come home and a success ful ending to the conflict need to drop the politics and get back to what really matters Our nation and its The lies in what will leave scars on our national spirit a war in or a war between To the recurring question about patri otism and Dobson replies I would never presume to call anyones love for country into I ask the same of Truly our nations honor is at and we have been given the opportunity to put our hand to the Should we in our moment of shy from it When asked how much we love our should we call retreat we stand at a moment of great let us now show our enemies just how much we love America and our way of Let us show them our love of country is as great as it ever or youve got to admire Dobson and the other virtuous and committed young men and women our military ;
