arrested about 11 Wednesday in the 2000 block of W Mill St after a New Braunfels Police Department officer found what he thought was a small packet of cocaine in the mans possession The man also gave the officer false information about his identity The man was booked into the Comal County Jail on no bond for possession of less than one gram of cocaine and fail ure to appear He also was booked on bond for fail ure to ID to a peace officer Bomb Threat Mountain Valley Elementary School in the Comal Independent School District was dismissed early Thursday after a written bomb threat was found in a girls restroom No explosive devices were found License Suspended License A 47yearold New Braunfels man was arrested Thursday by New Braunfels Police Department officers for public intoxication and driving with a suspended license He was booked into the Comal County Jail on bonds totaling A 24yearold San Antonio man was arrested Thursday by Comal County Sheriffs Office deputies for his second BY Ptm STONIPALMQUIST Staff writer New Braunfels residents concerned about the how the city looks can share their vision at a workshop Tuesday The Planning Commission is meeting for the second time to discuss a proposed aes thetics ordinance initially prompted by some council members disdain for metal buildings Council actually discussed an ordinance draft that prohibited new construction of metal buildings in residentially used or zoned areas but decided that this unfairly targeted certain structures and didnt really address the heart of the issue If were going to regulate aesthetics MEETING WHO New Braunfels Planning Commission WHAT Workshop on aesthetics ordinance WHEN Tuesday WHERE New Braunfels Municipal Building 424 S Castell Ave lets regulate aesthetics and not pick on metal District 3 councilman Randy Vanstory said If it is limited to metal buildings the ordinance would not accomplish what we say its going to accomplish and thats to beautify our he said Council decided to hand over the project to the planning commission in October In a meeting last month the planning commission decided the best way to address the issue was to establish overlay districts Each district would have its own set of regulations The downtown area for instance would have stricter rules But the commission has yet to decide what those rules would be People need to give us commis sion chairman John Dierksen said How else can we know what people are think ing The commission wants to know how people define pretty and ugly and what they think the city should like The meeting will give residents a chance to say for example I dont want metal buildings in my Dierksen said If people have a certain vision for how this community should look they need to come and tell he said This ordinance ultimately will have a large impact on the future of the city he said This will hopefully enhance what the city looks he said Stamped with love Students enter post office stamp contest BY HEATHER TODD Staff Writer Even with tax returns fast approaching there might be something about the New Braunfels Post Office 686 S Seguin that puts you in the mood for romance For the past several weeks the ceiling inside the post office has been strewn with about 90 bright ly colored pictures with lots of pinks and reds and irregular shaped hearts The 11 by 8inch pictures hang on red ribbons across the lobby creating a nice distraction between mailing bills and buying stamps One picture reads Love goes everywhere and another says the more traditional words Be my With pens pencils pink and red crayons and markers local students have created their own personal Valentines Day stamps They might not go on any of your letters or bills but the stamps share each childs mes sage of love and friendship with the local community Second and third grade stu dents at Comal Elementary recently participated in a Valentines Day contest with the New Braunfels Post Office Students were challenged to draw what they felt a Valentines Day stamp would look like Bradley won second place and Ashley Gutierrey won third In the third grade Ashley King won first place Kate McConaghy won second and Brad Mason won third On Monday Gonzales and post office staff will present the students with prizes at the school Gonzales also said the prizes would encourage students to write letters and communicate with others Thirdplace winners receive stationary secondplace win ners will get a stationary and envelope set and firstplace winners will receive a Daffy the Duck post card and stamp set Gonzales said the pictures would remain on display at the post office through Valentines Day Throughout the day post office visitors often stop and admire the drawings some even pick out their favorites Gonzales said he decided to approach school administrators about the Valentines Day con test after giving a presentation at the school We have a program where I go and talk to the students about the history of top three drawings out of both grades We have three clerks who pick the winners Theyre used to seeing stamps so they know what to look Ruben Gonzales postmaster at the New Braunfels Post Office said Gonzales said the post office saw the contest as a way to encourage letter writing among students Its a nice way to get chil dren involved with thinking about letter he said Each winning drawing has a first second or third place rib bon attached to it In the second grade Tyler Figel won first place Megan Lawyers see momentum building for death penalty moratorium DALLAS AP The American Bar
