for he said Kingsbury plans to stay in the district another year in a teaching or administration capacity and then to retire from education Several players said Friday they were pleased with the decision to find Kingsburys replacement among the current coaching staff but said Kingsbury would be greatly missed Senior Geoff Hangartner who played center and defensive line said I think it will be better for all of us because there wont be a lot of change hi the program hes just passing it Coach Larry Hill head football coach and athletic director at Smithson Valley High said Kingsbury would be next fall when the Unicorns and Rangers meet Im happy for Tim that he is taking that direction in his life Ive always enjoyed working with him Its always sad to lose member of the he said Former Cowboys coach dies Saturday at age 75 1B IRVING Texas AP Tom Landry the Dallas Cowboys coach who led Americas Team to five Super Bowls and was famous for pacing the sidelines for three decades in a business suit and felt hat died Saturday He was 75 Landry had been undergoing treatment since May for acute myelogenous leukemia Baylor University Medical Center issued a news release on behalf of Landrys family saying He will never be forgotten by all of us whose lives he has touched so Landry who coached the Cowboys for their first 29 years won two Super Bowls with star quarterback Roger Staubach His 270 victories are more than any NFL coach except Don Shula and George Halas Landry made his mark through innovations in offense and defense and considered them his greatest contribution to the game His legacy continued through the coaches he trained including Atlantas Dan Reeves and former New Orleans coach Mike Ditka who both took teams to the Super Bowl In Landrys first season 1960 the expansion Cowboys went 0 111 He didnt have a winning season until his seventh year But that began a streak of 20 consecutive winning seasons 13 division titles and five Super Bowl appearances Landry was fired by Jerry Jones the day he bought the team in February 1989 after three straight losing seasons His final record was 270178 6 a 601 winning percentage When he left he was as much a symbol of the Cowboys as the star on their helmets I think the whole Cowboys image came from said Staubach who had the honor of introducing Landry at his Hall of Fame enshrinement in 1990 just as Landry had done for him in 1985 I think Tom will always make the Dallas Cowboys more than a football Jackie or P J Wright 830 8854020 And the really important part is that the annual tournament is planned for the benefit of the Comal County Senior Citizen Center All proceeds are applied to the retirement of the mortgage debt which was incurred during the muchneeded expansion and the renovation created by the extensive flood damage in October 1998 The board of trustees of the Comal County Senior Citizen Foundation is sincerely apprecia tive of the communitys support in all endeavors of the center and in its goals and commitments to serve the elderly of the county Each year about meals are prepared at the center and deliv ered to the homebound elderly or handicapped The deliveries are made by an allvolunteer group with great support from the local churches In addition onsite meals are prepared and served at the center Physical therapy therapy regularly sched uled exercise classes and many social recreational and educa tional events are available to seniors In turn this enhances the quality of their lives and allows them to live independently for as long as possible If you see some signs moving around town announcing the tour nament its all because of the generosity of James Whetstone RentASign Portable Signs Company Many businesses and individu als have been extremely generous and helpful with the tournament each year We are fortunate to have this kind of volunteer sup port and each one will be acknowledged I always have said the senior center was blessed with the luck of the so only 10 days after St Patricks Day maybe some very lucky golfers and the senior center will find a few of those lit tle leprechauns still hanging around and lookin over their shoulders So come play partici pate and party Wed love to have you RETAIL BUILDERS speed throwing arm or this and that but the ultimate quarterback has to be able to make plays and we knew Pat was a playmaker from the Bailey did get several chances to take snaps his junior year when the Rangers had a game in hand but he might have proved himself as a quality quarterback as a 15 yearold sophomore Peel suf fered a concussion in the first half of a thirdround playoff game against Corpus Christi Calallen Bailey showed a lot of confidence poise and ability in that game by throwing for 180 yards and nearly leading the Rangers to the upset victory As a starter Bailey passed for more than yards and col lected another 750 on the ground He also accounted for 31 touch downs for the Rangers potent offensive attack Yet he did not get the looks from the top Division I schools those kind of numbers attract Certainly going into the year nobody looked at him as a quar terback They looked at him as an Hill said Of course his height was a factor the teams that go by the computer say you need somebody a little bit bigger than The Texas Aggies showed interest in Bailey but he says they didnt get close to me because they wanted me to play defensive Bailey and his GPA also attracted heavy interest from Navy Army and the Air Force Academy but I just think the military lifestyle wasnt for me I know its the best education but the Armed Forces and the long commitment that goes with it werent for Bailey also got looks from San Diego State Oregon State and just about every small school in Texas and every school in the Lone Star Bailey said deciding on a school was a difficult process He seriously considered 20 school and then dwindled the list down to five Kingsville Navy the Air Force Academy Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Angelo State University He decided on Texas Kingsville but dont think he set tled for that school Kingsville was at the top of the list for Bailey said Its close to home they have a great campus Ill get a great education and they have great Not to mention that he will be playing quarterback early in an offense designed to suit his strengths Jason Minnix
