New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 6, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Garden RidgeBracken bowlers roll with traditional flair By EDDA BUCHNER Correspondent Purposefully rumbling, the bowling ball heads for the nine pins. The bowler, like being caught in a time frame, remains in his throwing position for a fraction of a second, his hand extended, his glance fixed on the gleaming wooden lane. The suspense mounts as the ball, with gathering speed, crashes into the pins, and a clatter resounds like warriors clashing clubs. The shapely oak pins waver and fall, or defy gravity and right themselves to the great dismay of the player. It is fascinating to watch a bowler assess the situation and call upon his instincts, knowledge of angles and his hand-to-eye coordination to give the ball a calculated twist that brings down a full house just as surely as separate pins Precisely this calculating skill was tested during the annual trophy roll-off at Bracken Bowling Alley on Jan 25 and Feb I. Out of approximately 450 members (300 active>.79 participated in the event. Barbara Schulmeier, the secretary of the club, won the queen’sitle for the second time (first in ‘4 > in hot pursuit from Phillis Henzen. Barbara rolled 217 points out of a possible 270. Dewitt May won the king's trophy in the men's devision with 220 points Each player was allowed 36 balls; 18 throws for a full house and IK for single pins Although called single pins, there are, in actuality, three pins set up in a triangle, each accounting for six points. At the roll-offs, the best number one. number two and number three teams were selected in the men’s, women’s and couples' category All winners go on to compete in the county competitions and later in •.he tri-county roll-off. Tri-county in-;ludes Comal, Guadalupe, Bexar md Blanco in Kendall County. Bracken will vie for the title with members from 17 other nine-pin Dowling establishments. In 1985, the Bracken women’s team won the tricounty title and the junior league, which has been coached by Carol Jean Edwards for IO years, has captured several county titles Nine-pin bowling is an enjoyable team sport There is no individual scoring process as in lo pin bowling, consequently the win or the loss is carried valiantly by the six players of a team The pins are still set up by hand in the old-fashioned way. For a while the club had a shortage of willing teen ager help, but since the salary was raised from $7 50 to $10 for three hours, there are again plenty of youngsters willing to jug gle the heavy 3 pound. 9munce >uk pins The balls used in this game can >>o made either of plastic, hard or soft rubber, or the new urethane material, and the weight ranges anywhere between 9 and 16 pounds, men usually prefer the 16 pounder When the Bracken Bowling club was founded around 1900, it featured two solidly made lanes made of maple In 1956, two more lanes were added and the building enlarged. In 1974, the members decided to build an entirely new structure with eight lanes It is typical for the cooperative spirit of the club that the members treated the enterprise as an old Forum T Atli 4*r Tip* ere Isuklt. portal, lur in-in- information ask lh** IHS for fr»*t* Public-allod ">31. They sold lifetime memberships, as well as bonds and shares and got this $150,000 project successfully off the ground. The building has all the modem a nineties and the vice president herself, Velma Steubing, caters the refreshments. Still the membership fees have remained benign, $6 initiation fee and an annual due of $6. Elton Scheel, the club’s president for the last two and a half years is a successor of presidents dating back to Ernst Haag of 1914. Bracken then was a railroad town with more than just a handful of houses, it had two loan institutes, a post office and cotton gins. The nine-pin bowling had been imported from the old country, where even nowadays many ‘Gastwirt-schaften’ have at least one hardwood lane in a back room for the enjoyment of their customers. The German settlers incorporated bowling in their daily routine and in bad weather, when time stretched on unlimited, the people got together and bowled till the wee hours. The Friesenhahns, the Marbachs, the Heimers, the Haags and Vorden baums and many more families are now in their second and third generations, playing the game of their grandparents with just the same enthusiasm. More names are added each year as the greater Garden Ridge area proceeds to grow around the solidly established nine-pin bowling tradition of Bracken.
