By TNE ASSOCIATED PRESS The first description of the western frontier came back to Europe in the form of rumors of vast quanities of gold and riches. But when conquistador Don Francisco Vasquez de Coronado returned to Mexico from his devastating expeditions with pockets empty, there was talk instead of the land itself — the dramatic topography, the bounty, the possibilities of the region. It became the land of promise. For thousands of years before Europeans searched for cities of gold, Indians had lived heartily off the land now called Texas. The hunters and gatherers and later, the farmers, flourished on the plentiful game and rich soils. But this was before the climate became harsh, the land, hard. Initially, explorers had difficulty comprehending the power of the land — it was an awesome place to behold. One early pioneer, Mary Kabb, noted at the Colorado River Crossing that there was “nothing but a wilderness, not eaven a tree cut down to marke that plais.” Still, travelers and new settlers often stressed the beauty of wild Texas, usually in springtime when the land bore new life, color and warmth Geography professor Robin W. Doughty is familiar with the percep tions and makeup of Texas land Doughty reminds us that in the in-agural address to the first congress of the Republic of Texas in 18/16, President-elect Sam Houston captured the elusive quality of the Texas landscape by calling it “a spot of earth almost unknown to the geography of the age ” Perhaps to comprehend the state’s vastness, immigrants commonly divided its physical features into three distinct regions. One of these was the Coastal Prairie, Doughty says, an arc of lowland adjacent to the Gulf of Mex ico, filled with marshed, oak clumps or “mottes,’’ and black clay soils which became sandier and drier southward This flat, grass-filled plain lay behind a shoreline of sprawling bays and sand dunes that provided travelers only a few har bors, like Falveston, along the exposed coast The Coastal Region grew famous among hunters as a “nation of geese,” later, health seekers sought out fashionable beaches to in hale the bracing air, though when Houston delivered his speech, the coastal /.one was gaining a bad repuation for malaria type fevers Biting mosquitos thrived in Galveston, Brazoria, Indianola and in other communities along the coast The elevated Rolling Prairie region became the most promotable, according to Doughty, stretching from the Sabine River northward to the Red River and westward to the Balcones Escarpment It was a land likened to classical Greece and Rome The Rolling Prairie region, promoters argued, had a mild climate, fertile soils, abundant wood, pure water and deer, turkey and other game animals People entering Texas from Louisiana or Arkansas converged on Nacogdoches, the terminus of the Hispanic Camino Real, pushing westward under a closed canopy of hardwoods and loblolly and shortleaf pines But as they forded the numerous rivers intersecting their route, they came upon openings that gradually expanded The gently undulating land. combining woodland with prairie, was a major attraction for farmers who felled trees and turned the sod for cotton, corn and other staples Today, the Blackland prairie, running from about San Antonio northward to include Austin. Waco and Dallas, constitutes the largest acreage of continuous cultivation in the state. The “mountain” or western zone lay beyond the Colorado River. Doughty says Austin was the gateway to this third, remote and unexplored region Rainfall decreas ed as travelers passed through the rough limestone upland of the Ed wards Plateau, until after crossing the Pecos River, they entered a true desert where short range grasses, creosote bushes and mesquite covered the basins which received less than ten inches of moisture per year. Mountain Texas was home for throngs of mustangs, bison, pronghorn antelope; with mule deer and bighorn sheep living in the high uplands It was a harsh environment with drought and extreme heat and cold Doughty explained that it was not always clear where one region ended and another began But it was the middle ground that became the focus of early settlement — where the natural “parkland” of wood and prairie offered enormous promise Ckuitied CLASSIFIED WORD AD RATES .212* per word for I time insertion.
