I, 1994, will eliminate the need for commercial vehicle operators to have their commercial vehicles undergo dual inspections. The new inspection program, to be overseen by the Texas Dept, of Public Safety, will combine the U.S. Dept, of Transportation inspection with the State of Texas safety inspection. Beginning January I inspections obtained at other than an official commercial Texas State Inspection Station will not be accepted. Commercial motor vehicle means any self-propelled or towed vehicle except a farm vehicle with a gross weight, registered weight or gross weight rating of less than 48,000 pounds used on a public highway to transport passengera or property when: the vehicle or combination of vehicle has a gross weight, registered or gross weight rating in excess of 26,000 pounds; or the vehicle is designed to transport more than 15 people including the driver, or the vehicle is used to transport an amount of hazardous materials requiring placarding under the federal Hazardous Materials Transportation Act $5,000 check Herald-Zellung photo by Karla Wenzel Tho Knights of Columbus Council 4183, New Braunfels, recently presented a $5,000 check to the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School. The Qty of New Braunfels and New Braunfels Utilities will be sponsoring the seventh annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program in Landa Park beginning Dec. 26. The program saves valuable landfill space and provides free water-saving mulch for residents and for city parks and open spaces. An area in the swimming pool parking lot will be designated as the site to receive the trees. About 1,143 trees were coverted to mulch last Christmas. Approximately 6,000 Christmas trees have been mulched during the last six years of the program. Please remove nails and other metal fasteners from the tree's trunk to protect employees and the chippers used to convert the trees into mulch. Food shortage still exists in this country and the world over, and every vacant city lot should be cultivated now in time to secure a home crop of vegetables next spring. About 80 Rotarians, Rotary Ann's and guests attended the annual Rotary Club Christmas Party held at the Hotel Faust last Wednesday night.
