Vacation over for b-ball teams
By DAVID WINDER
Starting this weekend the holidays are over for most area basketball teams.
The Smithson Valley Rangers kick off the second half of the season by visiting Dripping Springs today.
“It’s a hard playing at the Drip,” Ranger coach John Valenzuela said. “They must have a different set of rims than everyone else. The rims are so hard you have to be on it because you are not going to get a shooter’s roll.”
The Rangers are currently I -1,8-9 on the season.
“We’d rather have a game before going back to playing district games," Valenzuela said. “It gives us a chance to get back from the Christmas holidays. We can go out and play and the game doesn’t count in the district standings."
The district standings might not come into play today but Valenzuela is still thinking about them.
“In the first round of district we have four road games and two home games,” Valenzuela said. “If we could go 4-2 or 5-1 in the first round that would be great. Then if we could duplicate that in the second round we could put ourselves in great position. The winner of this district could have a record of 9-3.”

The Canyon Cougars will play at Dripping Springs at 3 p.m. Saturday. Canyon is 1-1 against Dripping Springs this year.
The New Braunfels Unicorns will travel to Seguin for a 4 p.m. game Saturday.
“It’s going to be one of those games where you go into it uncertain because of the week off,” Unicorn coach Larry Schulte said. “But I feel good. I like the way things have been going.”
The Unicorns are currently tied for first place in District 26-5A with a record of 2-0. Their overall record is 11-3.
“The key on Saturday is to play consistent defense, which leads to good offense,” Schulte said. “I've had no complaints with our defense this season. But I think part of that comes from conditioning. So we’ll see how we do Saturday.”
The Unicorns will also see one of the better teams in the San Antonio area.
“We’re going to have to be ready for their pressure,” Schulte said. “We’re also going to have to get good guard play. They're going to be solid playing at home.”
The Smithson Valley Rangers travel to Ingram Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
Phoenix, led all forwards with 83,353 votes, and Olajuwon topped the centers with 77,258. Both have started seven All-Star games including the last two in a row. Barkley was MVP of the 1991 game.

Mavs trade Kidd; Spurs lose 94-86
(AP) — The Dallas Mavericks swung probably the biggest trade in their history when they sent Jason Kidd to the Phoenix Suns in a six-player deal.
The swap was also big news in Northern California, where Kidd, an Oakland native, is a Bay Area hero. But a road win by the Golden State Warriors also qualifies as a newsworthy event in the Bay Area.
While the Mavericks were still buzzing about Thursday night s blockbuster deal, the Warriors took control in the final four minutes for a 113-1 OS decision.
Before the game, the Mavericks traded Kidd, Loren Meyer and Tony Dumas for guard Sam Cassell, forwards Michael Finley and A.C. Green and a second-round draft choice.
It caught me off' guard,” Mavericks guard Jim Jackson said. But we’re getting three great players. Tilings happen in this league that sometimes seem bizarre, but work out to both teams’ advantages.”
Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp led Seattle with 20 points apiece while Perkins and Hawkins were a combined 7-for-8 from 3-point range in Seattle's 94-86 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday night.
With the Spurs down 71-62 after three quarters, Vernon Maxwell shot the Spurs hack into contention. He hit a 3-pointer and two other baskets in a 9-2 run as San Antonio closed to 73-71 with 8:36 left in the game.
Dominique Wilkins and Sean Elliott led the Spurs with 17 points each.
Charles Barkley returned from a two-game suspension and had 20 points and 16 rebounds as Houston snapped a four-game losing streak with a 101 -90 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night.
