Nancy Minor has been named the 1987 local Edward I) Jones Sr Heart of Gold w inner, announced Stan Cun ningham. local representative for the St Louis-based financial services firm Minor was presented with an engraved plaque and flowers at an awards ceremony held Dec 14 in her honor The judges for the award were Lucille Garcia past recipient of the Heart of Gold Aw ard Beatrice Knox another past recipient of the Heart of Gold Award. George Erben mayor of New Braunfels. Jim Webre former managing editor of the New Braunfels Herald Zeitung and T L Walker president of New Braunfels National Bank Judges selected Minor for her dedication to the Comal County Emergency Children's Shelter She w deeply touched by the death of a child as a result of child abuse in 1985 "once that time has devoted her efforts to working on a goal to see that .i temporary home be available where children can receive the special care and nurturing necessary to help them in their recovery from what can be a traumatic experience in their lives In January 198* she began a fund raising effort through local da\ care center'- Kid" Helping Kids and more than I «* wi"rai**ed Because of this success, and her spirit to see the project through. Minor was asked to become a board member of the governing board of directors by the Child Welfare Board Minor is one of the original incorporators of the articles of incorporation for the shelter She has spent countless hours as chairman of the licensing committee and established the shelter's policies and procedures She also w rote the philosophy of the shelter which brings the view of the shelter to light Minor arranged the state inspection and the shelter was granted a license on the first visit which is something the state inspector has not come across in her 14 years with the state All of Minor s work has been voluntary with the support of her husband David and son Justin She works full time for Merritt Schumann, Min nesota Life Insurance in New Braunfels Schumann also has given hi" support to Minor s endeavors Minor is now eligible for the na tional Edward D Jones Sr Heart of Gold Award which will be presented early next year The national winner will be flown to St Louis in February where the firm s managing partner John Bachmann will present the winner with a $5 OGO donation to the charity of his choice and tickets for a weeklong ali-expense-paid vacation for two in Ke\ VS est FlaCommunity Education to offer fitness classes during morning hours Bodyworks’ senior citizen fitness classes will begin Jan 4 at the Academy Street Gymn Classes will be held on Monday Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9 a rn Course consists of simple walk through fun and easy steps designed to maintain mobility, flexibility and muscle tone All of the stretching and toning exer cises are performed while seated in • hairs All ages are welcome Bodyworks! low-impact aerobics classes also will tie star ting Jan 4 at the Academy Street Gym Classes will be held on Mon day.
