Scranton Leadership New Braunfels is a program produced by the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce to identify and bring together men and women of New Braunfels who seek the opportunity to expand their involvement in community affairs and are willing to assume leadership positions. Nan Scranton, originally from California, has lived in the New Braunfels area for the past 17 years. She is married to Gene W. Scranton and they have three children — Jason, 13; Robert, 11 and Amanda, seven. Nan enjoys gardening, painting, needlework and camping. After graduating from El Cajon Valley High School in California, Nan earned an Associate Degree in Biomedical Electronics from Grossmont College, California, and later earned a BSN in Nursing from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio. Nanette, employed by McKenna Memonal Hospital since 1983, is currently the Director of Occupational Healthlink. Her directorship responsibilities include marketing and directing a hospital based occupational health program, directing an employee wellnes program and case managing hospital employee injuries. Bette enjoys sewing, art, cooking, hiking and camping. Bette is a graduate of Commerce High and holds a B.S. in Special Education/Elementary Education from East Texas State University. She also earned a Masters of Education Degree in Educational Diag/Language and Learning Disability from East Texas State University. While at East Texas State, she was vice president and secretary of her sorority and an Angel Flight Member. Bette commits well over 25 hours a month to our community’s betterment through organization affiliations and volunteerism. Her organizational affiliations include New Braunfels Service League (Provisional Chairman 1993-1994); Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital Auxiliary Board (vice president); New Braunfels Independent School District School Board Trustee; PTA-NBHS; Project Any Baby Can Alliance (Board of Directors); Youth Committee of the Texas Junior Quarter Horse Association; Co-Moderator of the Presbyterian Women (vice president 1995-1996); Vacation Bible School 1995 at New Braunfels Presbyterian Church; HOSTS (Tutor); VIP (Very Important Parents-NBHS, Board); and TASB (Texas Association of School Boards). Bette notes that three of the most challenging problems facing New Braunfels today are growth (commercial and residential); tourism management and youth (crime and activities for youth). Bette believes that she will benefit most from Leadership New Braunfels by gaining knowledge of a wide variety of issues, concerns and happenings in our community and through the additional knowledge of leadership skills. * SPARETIME? Nan’s community involvement includes Committee Member/Adult Leader of the Boy Scouts of America, Fund Raising Campaign worker in the United Way, adult coach for a flag football team; member of the tobacco usage survey committee for the American Cancer Society, instructor of CPR for the American Heart Association and a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Nan believes that through Leadership New Braunfels she will gain knowledge, assisting her in becoming an active participant in community affairs. She is especially interested in factors that affect the growth of our community. She believes in well-planned, community growth, encouraging new businesses that offer diversification, while keeping the community healthy. She also wants to encourage growth that will assure a future for our youth, a future that offers both educational opportunities and high paying jobs in our community.
