Eleven-month-old Christopher Cortez isn't real sure about this whole jolly old elf in a red suit thing as he visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus when they stopped by the Villa Serena Apartments Saturday afternoon.
Santa tries to make wishes come true at Villa Serena
By Leigh Jones
Jazmen Vargas, 6, approached Santa with a plan.
Once she was settled on his ample lap, she politely requested a Nintendo Game-Boy.
As soon as she was sure her present had been duly logged in Santa’s memory bank, she hopped off and waited to see what her brother would ask for.
“My favorite part of Christmas is the presents,” she said, waving her Polaroid picture vigorously and peering at it to see if traces of her image were visible yet.
Because the presents are an integral part of her holiday enjoyment, Vargas made sure she covered all the bases in the request department.
“This isn’t my first time to see Santa this year,” she said. “Last time, I asked for something different.”
To make sure you get one thing or the other?
She nodded in agreement, making the snowy white ball on the end of her Christmas hat bob up and down.
Not all of the children who stood in line to see Santa, who visited Villa Serena Apartments on Saturday at the special request of the New Braunfels Housing Authority, were as forward as Vargas.
Although they waited anxiously, shifting from one foot to the other and tugging on their mothers’ hands, most of the children hesitated when it was time to state their case for the just rewards of a year’s worth of good behavior.
Jony Hall, 4, looked from Santa to Mrs. Claus and back again without saying a word. Once his picture was taken, he headed back to his mother.
“Don’t you want to tell him anything?” she asked.
The little boy turned around slowly.
“Thank you,” he said with a shy smile.
Despite his unspoken requests, Hall did not leave Santa’s party empty handed. Thanks to the Housing Authority, he had a bag frill of candy in one hand and a $10 Wal-Mart gift card in the other.
Brianna Perkins, 7, knew exactly what she was going to spend hers on.
Tm getting a girl bike for Christmas, I know it,” she said. “Now all I need is a girl helmet to go with it.”
The boy helmet she already had just would not do, she explained.
Isaiah Mata, 13, was the first and oldest child to visit the Jolly Old Elf.
Of course, he did not sit on
Santa’s lap. After bumping fists with the gift-giver, as an acknowledgment of his emerging manliness, he stood behind the North Pole couple and posed for his picture.
“I want legos,” he said, while he waited for his picture to appear. “I kind of collect them. I’ll take any kind.”
Mata admitted his gift card would be a good advance on some of the colorful building block sets, but said he was not sure if he would buy any with it.
Oscar Zarnejo, 2, did not even have time to formulate a request.
As soon as his mother set him down in Santa’s lap, it was obvious he had one objective — getting away.
Santa did not seem offended, and Mrs. Claus handed the youngster a candy cane consolation prize.
“Maybe next year,” she said as the howling toddler made his escape.
