The 4th grade students in Sandra Black’s class at the New Braunfels Christian Academy held their own chili cook-off as a part of their study of Texas history. The 16 students were divided into 4 teams. They were given a basic chili recipe to prepare in class, but could add two “secret” ingredients. The students named their team, made signs, chose what to wear, and made name tags. Each team also made prickly pear cactus centerpieces, which included items from nature. Judges for the cook-off were members of the New Braunfels Fire Department. They tasted each of the recipes and evaluated the presentations. The judging categories were: tastiest, hottest, most unusual, and most extraordinary, with an overall award for hest presentation. Each group received an award from the judges, then all were invited to tour the fire trucks and ambulance parked outside the school. As one judge, Chief Phil Baker, remarked, “This was a great experience. We had as good a time judging as the kids had making it.” One of the student groups, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Included: (I to r) Ross Moncrief, Maureen Terry, Amanda Klar and Jason Laning.
