Hot off the Texas grill
Texas Cheesesteak Grill provides a hometown twist to longtime favorite
They are called CLEAR EARS® and this is your opportunity to try a pair risk-free through the holidays.
By Jessica Sanders
The Philly Cheesesteak may be a Yankee creation, but the Texas Cheesesteak is IOO percent hometown.
“I think of it as a Philly Cheesesteak with a Texas twist,” said Terri McDonald, operator of the Texas Cheesesteak Grill.
The Texas Cheesesteak includes thinly sliced rib eye steak on a roll piled with onions, pickles and a spicy barbecue sauce. McDonald said she and her brother, owner Rusty Hansmann, tried several sauces to find just the right mix of spicy and sweet.
The Texas Cheesesteak Grill was opened just over a year ago by I lansmann and McDonald, two New Braunfels natives, who were looking for something new to eat.
‘‘We were tired of the same old, same old,” McDonald said. “Rusty ran across this concept and thought it would be a nice change from Mexican food and hamburgers."
Hansmann and business partner Sandra Kunz set the restaurant up as a modern barbecue stand.
Most of the seating is outdoors to keep the feeling of a walk-up restaurant, like many cheesesteak vendors in Philadelphia.
The menu, however, is a step up from the typical lunch stop.
AT A GLANCE
■ What:Texas Cheesesteak Grill
■ Where: 1070 N. Business 35
■ Hours: Open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday
■ Takeout: 629-0404
“We use all fresh ingredients,” McDonald said. “Our steak is all rib eye, which is a better cut than the sirloin used in most restaurants. We also use only flesh vegetables, Boars I lead cheeses and our rolls are par-baked so we can serve them as fresh as possible.”
The menu also includes unique offerings such as Texadillas, quesadillas with rib eye steak or chicken, cre-ate-a-steak sandwiches and all-beef hot dogs. Salads and soups are available, and carb-concious diners can substitute lettuce wraps for rolls in any sandwich.
No foods in the restaurant are fried, and most are prepared on a griddle in front of customers.
“There aren’t a lot of ingredients, but most of the things on the menu can be made 50 different ways,” she said. “I’ve been eating here more than a year, and I’m not burned out yet.”
There is also a happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Domestic beers are $1.50 and $1.75. McDonald said they eventually hope to add a big screen television for outdoor sports parties, as well.
...they CAN make you feel “PLUGGED UP”
...like your head is in a BUCKET.
NOW...A REMARKABLE technology from NewSound solves the problem forever!
McDonald said that she and Hansmann, both graduates of New Braunfels High School, are excited to be working in the community they grew up in and hope Texas Cheesesteak Grill becomes a hometown tradition.
“We would love to be able to pass this down to our children,” she said. “We want people to know that we’re from here.”
