New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 9, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Parade off LightsSA residents talk with Soviets SAN ANTONIO AP1 - While leaders of the Superpowers were discussing nuclear disarmament four San Antonio residents and five Soviets were busy learning more about each other The nine were part of an international talk show hosted by radio sta tion WOAI AM to coincide with Tuesday, s start of the summit between President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in Washington During their 90-minute conversation the nine along with radio cohosts Pat Rodgers and Eliza Son neland talked about education entertainment business peace and disarmament Although there were many similarities the differences in the talk show sites were dramatic While the Americans were in an air conditioned studio with individual headphone-, and microphones the four Soviets were standing outside a telephone txxith in freezing weather sharing one telephone A crowd of several hundred people were watching them talk to the Americans and one woman stopped to join in the conversation Both sides welcomed the summit "Certainly, everybody here is extremely excited and we think it is a historical and important meeting.
