Wassail (Was-hael) meant “Health to You!” The Wassail Bowl is an old English Custom and dates back to the day of the Saxons.
Wassail Bowl varies with every household. It is always served hot. Later the Wassail was associated with Christmas and served on each of the twelve days of Christmas from an outsize bowl. In medieval times people, carrying their outsize bowl or large mug, sang from door to door in exhange for refills.
‘ The medieval version of Wassail was made with beer, wine, spices, sugar, lemon, apples and toast. Our modem version is more to our liking today. It was • customary to dip or float toasted bread in the hot drink and it is from this custom that “drinking a toast" originated. Come enjoy the many tastes of Wassail!
