TSNBISD trustees to choose new president Monday
By Jessica Sanders
The New Braunfels Independent School District’s Board of Trustees likely will have a new president after a special meeting Monday.
Board President Jorge Maldonado said he plans to nominate another trustee for his office during the board’s annual reorganization.

not like to be president anymore; I’d like to just be a regular board member,” he said. “I’ll step down, and we’ll see who the board nominates.” Students also may see some
changes in scheduling and school start times. Trustees will re-evaluate the block schedule currently in effect for the high school. They also will review information on how school start times affect academic performance.
“We’ll be going over the information and also looking at the cost implications,” Maldonado said.
Also during the meeting, the
board will consider discuss amendments to the contract of Superintendent Ron Reaves. It is standard policy for the board to consider extending the superintendent’s contract in January of each year. Maldonado said it made sense to the board to review amendments before considering the contract extension.
Reaves has been superintendent of NBISD since 1997.
County clerk anounces bid for fourth term in office
From Staff Reports
Comal County Clerk Joy Streater announced Friday she would seek a fourth term in office.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the people of Comal County as their county clerk and I’m not done yet,” said Streater, who is a Republican.
The filing period for county offices runs through Jan. 2. The primary election will be conducted March 7. The general election will be Nov. 7.
“During my tenure, I have automated the cleric’s office and automated the court systems complete with capabilities of scanning the documents into the computer for instant viewing for the rest of the staff and judges,” Streater said. “Overseeing nine departments is a challenge for me. I have seen the county show tremendous growth during the past 13 years and have watched my offices grow with it. For example, in 1993, we were filing an average of IOO to 150 documents per day. Today, we file an average day is 350 to 500 docu
ments per day. Birth and death registration has grown as well as court case filings in County Court-at-Law.”
Streater is responsible for beginning a collection program in 1999 to increase the collection of court costs, fines and fees.
“With the help of the judges, we have watched that endeavor flourish,” Streater said. “New plans will hopefully make it even better next year. Oh, by the way, we now have two County Courts-at-Law instead of just one.”

That means more court days, and a lot more paperwork to handle.
Streater is just beginning a project to digitize the plats and maps of Comal County.
“There are over 10,000 maps and plats to be digitized, indexed and archived. We are anxious to get started,” she said. “This office could not run without my able staff of 28, and I hope the people of Comal County will let me finish some of the projects under way by re-electing me for another
term. It is a pleasure to be a part of the Comal County team.”
A county clerk wears a few hats, Streater said. She is responsible for all county records, which means she’s involved in one way or another with most county business — and much of the public’s in the form of deeds, marriage certificates, birth certificates, death certificates and other documents. She oversees the clerks and paper flow in county court-at-law and is responsible for keeping the minutes of commissioners' court.
The county clerk also oversees elections.
