The Hoffmann Agencies in New Braunfels offer a broad range of insurance and security plans, but the three men who head the firm say what they really deal in is service and trust.
“These are the two things that keep us in business,” says Carroll Hoffmann, who founded the firm 31 years ago. “You can buy what we offer someplace else, but people have learned that we provide superior service ... and they know we arc people they can trust.”
Since its founding, the firm has provided life, disability and health insurance. In 1983, it expanded lo offer auto, home and business insurance.
And today it also has become heavily involved in providing mutual funds, Medicare supplement plans, long term care plans, cancer plans, tax-deferred annuities and pension plans as well as a variety of other services aimed at ensuring long term financial security.
Carroll Hoffmann and his son, Tobin, smile as they speak of the firm’s beginnings.
“I started in the back of a car,” Carroll says, “then moved into the back of a garage.”
The business soon moved to the Landa Professional Center then to an office on Mill Street, then into the Executive Bank building and finally to its present location at 447 S. Seguin St.
When he started 'he business, Carroll was its only employee. Today there arc nine.
And Tobin says the nine are with the firm because "they arc ah real people people.”
Two of the nine — Carroll and Betty Heine-meycr — are fluent in German, often still an important asset in a community whose residents pride themselves on their German ancestry and heritage.
Carroll, who carries the title vice president and treasurer of the Hoffmann Agency, Inc., has long been active in die life of his hometown.
“You name it and he’s done it,” laughs Tobin,
tcrs. He has been presented the San Antonio Association of Life Underwriters’ Public Service Award and he has been a member of the Million Dollar Roundtable “for going on his 27th year,” which means he ranks in the top IO percent in the world in terms of life insurance sales.
Tobin Hoffmann, who is president of the Hoffmann Agency, Inc., has himself been a member of that exclusive fraternity for nine years and he, loo, is active in civic affairs. He is a Rotarian and he, too, works with Boy Scouting. He is a member of the Chamber’s Blue Coats and he is a Wurstfcst Opa.
The third member of the film’s management team is David Huddleston, president of Hoffmann Casualty Agency.
Huddleston is the tail twister for the New Braunfels Breakfast Lions Club and serves as that organization’s program chairman.
He is a native of San Antonio and, after his graduation from Southwest, began selling life insurance in the New Braunfels arca. Impressed with him, Carroll and Tobin soon convinced him to join them.
The combination has been a fortuitous one. David’s primary interest lies in the arca of casualty insurance, and both Carroll and Tobin Hoffmann find themselves gravitating more toward life and health insurance.
Both Carroll and Tobin Hoffmann were bom in New Braunfels and both Tobin and David attended Southwest Texas Stale University.
Carroll Hoffmann stresses that Tobin and David gradually assume more of the responsibility within the Hoffmann Agencies. “That ensures perpetuation,” he says. “Their faith and their youth arc one of our greatest assets.”
Carroll Hoffmann says his greatest satisfaction is in seeing "people mature into wealth they didn’t think they could achieve” through the services he and his firm can provide.
And, while many have him to thank for having been able to find that financial security, Hoffmann offers his own thanks.
“I want to be sure and say thank you," he told a reporter recently. ‘Too many people forget lo say Hunk you.
“We’ve been here 31 years now and we have a lot of people to thank for that.”

obviously proud of his father’s community involvement. “He’s been president of the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, Wurs-tfest and the St. Paul Lutheran Church congregation. He’s been the chairman of the Guada-Coma District of the Boy Scouts and he’s been given scouting^ highest honor, the Silver Beaver Award. And he chaired the city’s 125th anniversary celebration.
“He’s stayed out of politics, though,” the younger Hoffmann says. Bul then he pauses and adds, ’’Well, I guess he hasn’t, either, because he had to mn for the Edwards Underground Water District board.”
On a professional level, the elder Hoffmann has served as president of the San Antonio Association of Life Underwriters and as a director of the Texas Association of Life Underwri-
