Cougars hoping for redemption this year
was part of the drum corps on Friday nights. He said he remembers plenty of amusing stories.
“I can remember some of the most unusual things that happened,” Finley said. “We used to flip our drums when we walked out to the fields. One time, I flipped my drum and it came loose from the strap and rolled across the field. We were getting ready to play the alma mater and I was standing there with my sticks but no drum.”
As president of the New Braunfels All Sports Booster Club, Finley has been busy preparing for the season. Wednesday, the club hosted more than 400 athletes and their families during Meet the Unicorns night at the civic center.
Friday night football is more personal for Canyon Coach Les Davis. After nine months of waiting, the new year could not begin soon enough for the Cougars. After ending the 2004 campaign with a bitter loss to New Braunfels that knocked the Cougars out of the playoffs, Canyon has been itching to get back out on the field.
“We’ve been working since the morning after the New Braunfels game last year getting ready,” Davis said. “The two biggest motivating factors are anger and hunger, and we have a little of both.”
Davis has been coaching football for more than two decades, but he still gets excited when the lights come on at the football stadium.
Canyon High School cheerleaders Brandi Horn, bottom left, Christina Miller and Jamie Owens show their support for the Cougars and fellow cheerleader Jennifer Veliz during a scrimmage at the school last Friday night.
“I just love the idea of coming to work,” Davis said. “I get butterflies every game. That’s a great part of it, the competition, seeing the kids perform. I don’t know what else I d do with my life."
As the president of the Smithson Valley All Sports Booster Club, Finley said he has sensed a growing excitement as the season opener has approached. I Ie said with the success the Rangers had
last year, reaching the state championship game, and with a solid core of returning players, Smithson Valley fans are excited and ready.
“Everybody’s ready to play football again,” he said. “It’s kind of slowly building. I’ve gotten e-mails from females, some more excited than the guys I know. I think the community is very, very together for Smithson Valley. Its a very strong, tight-knit group."
