Local marching bands battle heat to prepare for upcoming football, competition seasons
Dozens of water containers belonging to members of the Mighty Unicorn Band are kept nearby as the band practices Wednesday at New Braunfels High School.
It was humid and sticky Wednesday morning, and the clouds were somewhat of a relief for high sc hooiers firacticing band routines.
Learning how to march is the prelude for the various routines [X'rformm during tootball games and area marching contests in the fall. That's especially true for incoming freshmen.

As with football, early-season band practices occur in the early mornings.
This summer has Ix't'n extraordinarily hot
— with temperatures well over TOO degrees and heat indices higher than that
— and that has band directors practicing caution, especially at the start of the season.
"The first day back, more than anything it's the kids re-adjusting to the physical activity'," Canyon band direc tor jason Adam said. "Some of them have been sitting around all summer and haven't done anything. That first morning some of them can get lightheadtHl, liut we haven't had any instances of kids getting sick or passing out"
(;anyon's morning prac tices last from 7-I (); }() a.m., while New Brauntels got's from 8: U)-11:30 a.m. Because it's hot
