In addition, the Texas Festivals and Events Association bestowed three marketing awards on the chamber’s convention and visitor’s bureau July 15. The chamber’s advertising campaign was named Best in Show, competing against 186 entries from around the state. In addition, the chamber’s office park brochure and direct mail piece received a first place award as Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce convention and visitors bureau director Judy Young shows off the three awards received from the Texas Festivals and Events Association. Photo submitted Briefs Women's chamber plans retreat The New Braunfels Women’s Chamber of Commerce is hosting a members' only overnight retreat on Aug. 12. The retreats purpose is to celebrate the upcoming four-year anniversary of the Women’s Chamber, which has more than I OO active members. The main speaker w ill be Ginger Purdy, founder of the San Antonio Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Network Power. Melissa Graham, owner of Survival Women, will lead a series of ropes courses and host a mystery dinner that evening. The Women’s Chamber’s annual dues are SOO and the focus of the chamber is helping women business ow ners through networking and educational programs. Hotel occupancy posts big increase Hotel occupancy results are in for the second quarter, posting a 15 percent increase over 1909, the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce reported. April, May and June comprise the second quarter, and this increase was recorded despite media coverage of the low flow conditions on the Guadalupe River. Busy week slated for Blue Coats Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce chair Dennis Heitkamp and Chamber Blue Coats will assist Beds, Inc. with a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony at IO a.m. Wednesday at 381 Landa St. The Blue Coats also will attend a ground breaking ceremony for Eden Home Chapel. The chambers year-in-review video and directory received third place awards. “There were only five chambers in the state of Texas that were multiple award w inners, and only the McAllen chamber garnered more awards. The Greater New Braunfels Chamber received the second most awards and tied McAllen for awards in the most categories,” said Michael Meek, president of the local chamber. Other multiple award w inners were Bryan College Station and Odessa with three each and San Angelo w ith two. The Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, Inc’s Texas Legislative Conference received the Local Chamber Achievement Award in the field of Governmental Affairs. The conference will celebrate its 35th year next March in the New Braunfels Civic Center. The Texas Festivals and Events Association had its annual conference on July 15 in Arlington. The local chamber’s C&VB was recognized for “Best Direct Mail Piece” for its Festtage in New' Braunfels program. “Best Press Kit” for Festtage in New Braunfels and finally “Outstanding Accomplishment in Festival and Event Promotion” for its Trees for the C&VB environmental program. Trees for the C&VB was a post-October 1998 flood recovery event. It sponsored more than 300 trees to replace flood damaged or lost trees in the area. The aw ard w inning direct mail piece showcased the fall and winter events for New Braunfels with emphasis on Wurstfest and the Festtage in New Braunfels calendar of events. The direct mail piece series was developed as a result of the 1995 conversion study with an emphasis on developing a direct marketing concept to reach the consumer.
