Excitement builds for shuttle launch
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP)—On the eve of the next-to-last space shuttle launch, thousands of people streamed to the region for a chance to watch today’s fiery spectacle. Adding to the fever-pitch excitement: The first-ever visit by an entire presidential family.
Also watching Endeavour’s final liftoff will be the shuttle commander's wounded wife, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The crowd estimate surged Friday to 700,000 — or more — as people scrambled to witness a
launch before NASA closes out the 30-year era of space shuttle flight this summer.
"It’s history,’’ said Cotton Moore.
He and his wife, Barbara, drove their RV to Jetty Park to get an up-close look. Their view from their home in Jacksonville, to the north, isn’t as good — “like watching fireworks from a distance," Barbara said.
Discovery’s final launch in February also drew large crowds—but that was a mere 400,000.
Convicted RFK assassin says girl manipulated him
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Convicted assassin Sirhan Sirhan was manipulated by a seductive girl in a mind control plot to shoot Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, and his bullets did not kill the presidential candidate, lawyers for Sirhan said in new legal papers.
The documents filed this week in federal court detail extensive interviews with Sirhan during the past three years, some done while he was under hypnosis.
The papers point to a mysterious girl in a polka-dot dress as the controller who led Sirhan to fire a gun in the pantry of the Ambassador Hotel! But the documents
suggest a second person shot and killed Kennedy while using Sirhan as a diversion.
For the first time, Sirhan said under hypnosis that on a cue from the girl he went into “range mode" believing he was at a firing range and seeing circles with targets in front of his eyes.
“I thought that 1 was at the range more than I was actually shooting at any person, let alone Bobby Kennedy,” Sirhan was quoted as saying during interviews with Daniel Brown, a Harvard University professor and expert in trauma memory and hypnosis.
He interviewed Sirhan for 60 hours.
Terrorist attack hits cafe in Morocco, kills 14 Thursday
MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — A massive terrorist bombing tore through a tourist cafe in the bustling heart of Marrakech’s old quarter, killing at least 11 foreigners and three Moroccans in the country’s deadliest attack in eight years.
At least 23 people were wounded in the Thursday blast a few minutes before noon in Djemma el-Fna square, one of the top attrac-tions in a country that depends heavily on tourism, Moroccan Interior Minister Taib Chergaoui said.
Government spokesman Khalid Naciri told the AP it was too soon to lay blame for what he called a terrorist attack but he noted that Morocco regularly dismantles cells linked to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and says it has disrupted several plots.
At least eight French citizens were being treated at Marrakech’s mainTofail Hospital, along with one Canadian, a British citizen and three Moroccans, emergency room chief Hicham Nejmi said.

of Kate’s dress are posted online by Buckingham Palace, prospective brides will see details of the gown that might be missed on television.
Some brides-to-be might want a direct copy of Kate’s gown, but others will take the bits and parts they like to create a more personalized dress.
"Everybody’s different," Worley said. “Every bride has her own style."
Worley expects the royal wedding will be “good for business” in New Braunfels. There’ll be “a lot of influence after the ceremony."
War of the wedding roses
Debbie Crump, floral designer at Comal Flower Shop on the Plaza, said the impact of William and Kate’s wedding flowers will be "immediate.” Princess Diana’s wedding “changed weddings for a whole decade," said Crump, part of a team that does “a lot” of floral arrangements and bouquets for local brides. “Before Diana, flower girls dropped petals. After Diana, they carried flowers.”
Also, when Diana walked down the aisle of St. Paul’s Cathedral carrying a bouquet of cascading flowers and English ivy, “every bride wanted a cascade to the floor.”
Once photographs of Kate’s bouquet are released, florists over the world will scrutinize them for inspirational details.
When bride magazines published close-up pictures of Diana’s bouquet after her 1981 wedding, “it had hidden meanings that you couldn’t see before,” said Crump. “1 didn’t know it had yellow roses.” Yellow roses represented the House of Windsor, she said, while ivy represented England and thistle symbolized Scotland.
“Royal weddings stimulate the public interest,” Crump said. “There’s focus on the creative use of flowers.”
Asked Tuesday if she planned to watch the wee-hours ceremony, Crump said, “You bet — but I’ll probably TiVoit.”
The princess’ new‘do At Coiffeurs de Ville beauty shop, owner Diane Chamber-lain said she was not going to get up before dawn this morning to watch the wedding, but because of reruns, "I’ll watch it all day.”

beauty shop, but the salon pro-vides books of formal hair styles to help those who are undecided.
In the weeks before the ceremony, royal-watchers pondered: Would Kate’s hair be “up or down" on her wedding day?
Girls with long hair, Chamberlain said, sometimes wear their hair “up” for weddings because “it looks more formal."
After the ceremony, William and Kate’s guests were headed to Buckingham Palace for a lunchtime reception.
‘She’s just a regular gal’
The wedding cakes, a multilayered fruitcake and a choco-late biscuit (cookie) cake designed by Leicestershire cake designer Fiona Cairns, were on the menu.
Angela Pineda of Cakes Divine at Canyon Lake, who designs custom cakes for all occasions, believes that William and Kate’s wedding cakes “might influence girls... but they’ll scale it down because the (royal) cakes will be huge.”
The British wedding is tempting to watch — and to copy—because the royal couple “are real people, there’s nothing sci-fi or fantasy about them.” Also, said Pineda, “Kate is not a royal, but she’s marrying into a royal family. She’s just a regular gal... the royal wedding intrigues Americans because it’s a fairy story come to life.”

To my Dr. Mark Statler: April 27, 2011
I am 23 years old today and I want to thank you for always being there for me. In the past years, although I am only 32 pounds, I feel that I have been very lucky in my lifetime to have had you for my doctor. I understand that when I turned 21 years-old that you could no longer be my doctor. But, Dr. Statler, when I needed you the most you were there for me. If it wouldn’t have been for you and your good care, I might not have turned 23 years-old today.

‘A fairly classic design’
At jewelry shops in New Braunfels, an ongoing item of interest is the diamond-and-blue sapphire engagement ring William presented to Kate — a ring, as the world knows, that once belonged to Diana.
Ernesto’s Jewelry Factory and St. Anthony Jewelry have created smaller versions of the famous engagement ring and many customers want to take a look — but they don’t buy.
"It’s a fairly classic design," said Cyndi Miller, a manager at Ernesto’s. “Sapphires are occasionally used as a center."
A sapphire ring, as opposed to a softer opal, for example, is a good ring for daily use, said Miller. “It costs less, but it’s still hard.”
A diamond is “a 10” on the hardness scale, she said, while a sapphire is a 9.5.
On Tuesday, Miller was unsure if she would tune into the wedding, but “I always like to watch these things."
William Betancourt, owner of St. Anthony Jewelry, said customers ask to see his version of the royal engagement ring, which also includes a matching pendant.
“We have some jewelry that resembles her ring,” he said. Customers “look at it and they talk about it.”
Asked if he was planning to watch the wedding, Betancourt said, “Oh, yes.”
What about the ceremony?
There is more to a wedding than business.
The Rev. Ripp Hardaway, pastor of St. John’s Episcopal Church, said that by the time a bride walks down the aisle "we are finally to the point in the wedding process where all the secondary issues are settled and we are at the part where Jesus is the foundation."
St. John’s Episcopal, he wrote in an email from the Holy I .and where he is traveling, is a “part of the same group” as the Anglican Church and connected that way to Westminster Abbey, site of today’s ceremony.
“The only reason our denominational name differs is because of the American Revolution, where we wanted independence from the monarchy and wanted the bishops to rule instead of the king/queen. ‘Episcopal’ means rule by bishops.”
But Hardaway too may be influenced by the royal wed-» ding of William and Kate: “I can tell you that as an Anglican/Episcopal priest, I would like to see the wedding only to see how the liturgy is done compared to what I do at weddings.”

• Mike Fitsko, Herald-Zeitung columnist for the Sunday Life section who is of British descent from his mother, planned to watch the ceremony with his wife Debbie.
"It’s really special... it's very British." As far as the match between William and Kate, "I'm just thrilled. She is mature and well-educated. Diana was so young — it may have been doomed from the start."
One New Braunfels resident, Ross Fortune, British-born owner of Phoenix Saloon, planned to avoid the wedding: "We'll see how much the dress costs the British taxpayers." Many people in England, he said, view the royals and the monarchy as "a bunch of freeloaders."
But Fortune's business partner and girlfriend, Debbie Smith, said she "saw Princess Diana on TV" for that royal wedding long ago. "I was 12."
