New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 29, 1993, New Braunfels, Texas THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 1993 HERALD ZEH I 3 In The News Ambulance chasing hotline gets leads AUSTIN (AP) — A toll-free hotline created to report “ambulance chasing” by Texas lawyers has given State Bar of Texas investigators more than 50 leads during its first month of operation. Bar officials said Wednesday that at least 175 people had called the hotline, which began operation March 19. TWC appointments named by Gov. AUSTIN (AP) — Two peo-pie, Donna Lynn Snyder of Dallas and Royce Faulkner of Austin, have been appointed to the Texas Workers’ Compensation Commission, subject to Senate confirmation. Ms. Snyder, 41, will serve until Feb. I, 1997. Faulkner, 62, will serve until Feb. I, 1999. Gay passengers cause airline concern FORT WORTH (AP) — Crew members requested the removal of all pillows and blankets from an American Airlines plane upon its arrival at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport following a gay rights march in Washington. The flight captain said the request came from flight attendants, who told him that visibly ill people were on board, according to the Allied Pilots Association. American said it would conduct a full investigation and give its crew members and ground staff an opportunity to explain what happened before considering disciplinary measures. Free cancer screening offered The Community Council of South Central Texas Family Planning Program, is offering Free Mammograms, to those who meet eligibility requirements. CCSCT has recieved a grant from the Center for Disease Control through the Texas Department of Health. This is a grant to provide breast and cervical cancer screening tests to low-income women. With federal funds from this grant, Family Planning patients whose medical condi- Eva Barrientes honored for 36-year service Eva Barrientes of San Antonio, was guest of honor recently at a luncheon in recognition of her thirty-six years of employment with Barkel, Inc. of New Braunfels. Mrs. Barrientes, retiring as sewing room manager, began her employment with Barkel, Inc. in San Antonio in 1956 when the furniture manufacturer was still located there. For a short period of time in the early 1970’s Barkel, Inc. operated facilities in both San Antonio and New Braunfels. With the consolidation of operations in New Braunfels in 1974 Mrs. Bamentes began her daily commute to our city. Mrs. Barrientes is looking forward to enjoying her retirement years with her husband Adam and their 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Barrientes has retired from Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio after 46 years of service. Their daughter, Carmen Duron, of San Antonio, is also a long-time employee of Barkel, Inc. and continues the family tradition. nmuouoNG... Mammography detects breast tumors through an X-ray process before any growth is large enough to be felt by a doctor or by the woman herself. Colposcopy, which is a magnified view of a woman’s cervix, allows early detection of cervical cancer. The Family Planning Program is in its second year with the Breast and Cervical Cancer screening grant. All of the Family Planning clinics provide reproductive health care including contraceptive methods to low-income women in the South Texas area. Kennard Kollaus, M.D., of Seguin is Medical Director and monitors the medical protocol for each of five Family Planning clinic sites, which are staffed by nurse practitioners and other health care technicians.
