New Braunfels senior Keith Britton lines up a shot during Wednesday’s Region IV-4A Boys Golf Tournament at Mission Del Lago.
"I was just playing really well at the right time," Carter said. "In Super Champs I play some of the kids that ITI see at regionals, so I know some of them are going to be pretty good. To me it’s just another tennis tournaments. I just have hi play my game."
Along with Speer, Wimberley and Carter, junior James Farley and sophomore Jacob
and took home the third-place medal, but Borrego and Britton both bogled the hole and moved on to a second playoff hole.
Britton’s first shot on the second playoff hole (par-5, 561 yards) again sliced to the right and into a ditch. But, despite the high grass, Britton blasted his second shot back on the middle of the fairway and about 70 yards from the hole.
“I hit that pretty solid. It was probably one of the more solid shots I hit all day,” Britton said. “I was just trying to put myself in a good position, and I did, but he (Borrego) made an incredible shot.”
Borrego’s third shot from the middle of the fairway put him less than five feet away from the hole and in good position for a birdie. Britton’s third shot left him about 30 feet away from the pin and when his first putt came up short and just to the left, Borrego tapped in for a birdie and captured the final spot at the state tournament.
“I had been hitting putts soft all day, so I didn’t want to break the streak,” Britton said jokingly.
Ikxikins won the boys doubles district and are preparing for today’s regionals.
"They’re just scrappy tennis players,” Brnwn said. ‘They’ve worked hard together all season and they know each other’s games really well.”
Jay Daniel tcxik third place in lioys singles at the district tournament and qualified as an
Britton’s teammate Nick Williams, who was tied for the lead at 71 after the first round on Tuesday, shot an 81 Wednesday to finish at 152. Senior Chase DuBose, who shot an 85 in the first round, improved six strokes in the second round and turned in a 164. Sophomore Josh Ray shot a 157 (76-81) and junior Jordan Gomez had a 168 (82-86).
Canyon High Schcxil junior Kris Cames, who was competing as a medalist, shot a 76 on Tuesday and a 78 on Wednesday tx) finish with a 154 and tied for 13th place.
T was eight over after IO and I got back down to four before I ended up six over,” Carnes said. “I made a couple birdies when I needed tx) and I feel like I finished strong.”
Carnes said he was very pleased just to finish in the top 15.
"I ve really moved along my game this year. I broke 70 for the first time at district last year and this year I was a little more consistent shooting 70s,” Carnes said. “My goal this year was to place in the top 15 at regionals and I got in the top 13.”
alternate for regionals.
“Our whole team is peaking at the right time,” Brown said. “As a coach it makes you happy to see your kids playing their best tennis when they need to be playing their best, lf we can start the regional tournament like we started the district tournament, we’ll Ix* in gtxxl shape.”
and Tyler Tunnell’s hit-and-run double to right-center field scored Rester. After Green singled and stole second, Chad Gregson, who was 2-for-4, ripjx*d a two-run double the opposite way into left-center field. The Cougars belted out ll hits, including at least one hit f rom eight of nine starters.
'Hie thing about Bevil Is that he throws strikes,” Garza said. “He was undefeated in district before tonight and somelxxly said they read that he was averaging bout 75 or 80 pitches, which is great, but it means he throws strikes. We just triixl to make contact
Bevil throw 120 pitches in seven innings and gave up seven runs (one unearned). Ho struck out nine.
"You’re not going tx) win many games giving up seven runs, hut he pitched a gotxl game," Bl wards said. “Ho hung some balls and lot them get some hits early."
After Canyon added a run in the fourth on an RBI-single by Rester, New Braunfels chalked up two in the bottom half of the inning on RBI-single by Travis Kostan and Jory Wort h.
The (Cougars went up 5-2 in the fifth on Brian Juarez’s RBI-sin
gle through tin* right side of the infield, but two errors and a sacrifice fly by Jordan Herring in the bottom half of the inning allowed the Unicorns to tie the game at five apiece.
"Our kids just couldn’t relax and they were playing really tight," Garza said.
Canyon (14 IO overall, 8-3 in district) clos<*x out the regular season against Del Valle (0-16, 0-11) at 7 p.m. Friday at home.
“This win is very big for us tonight," On-en said. “We wanted first place and we knew it was going to take us winning two
games to do it. We just put it all on the line and everybody played their best.”
New Braunfels finishes up Friday with Lake Travis (13-11, 6-5), which has lost one game the second round of district play and has the best record after the midway point.
"We’re going to show up to play. No more starting games slow," Edwards said. “Lake Travis wants to show something lx*eausc they were picked to win the district and obviously had a poor first round of district. We can’t go into the playoffs losing three in a row "
