A two-base error in the top of the 10th helped send the Cougars (15-6, 5-4) to their fourth straight loss — all in District 27-4A play.
“It was a great ball game that was hard-fought by both sides," Canyon coach Peter Garza said. “Our kids did a good job — they got after it.”
Ben Nelson went six innings and Jerris Springfield went the other four but got the loss. Cameron Henk went 4 for 5 with a solo home run in the fifth.
Canyon led for most of the game, scoring twice in the second and adding another run in the third. The Mustangs (11-12, 3-6) scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth. Canyon went ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Mustangs scored in the top of the seventh to send it into extra innings.
Depending on the Burnet-Lake
Travis outcome Friday, Canyon still had not clinched a playoff spot. It may need to win at New Braunfels Tuesday to get into the playoffs.Dripping Springs 5, New Braunfels 4
DRIPPING SPRINGS—The Unicorns (14-11, 3-6) were officially eliminated from the playoffs after surrendering three runs in the bottom of the seventh to the league-leading Tigers (18-6-1,7-2).
After reliever Ryan McGinley (5-3) surrendered a walk and a single, and both runners moved up after a sacrifice, a throwing error on a hit into right field plated both runners. A single by the following batter ended the game.
“It was bad timing for that error," said New Braunfels coach Doug Edwards. “We showed up ready to play. We left the bases loaded twice, and we didn t score enough runs late in the game.”
New Braunfels had nine hits. Cole Gleason started and left with a 3-1 lead in the fifth.
The Unicorns will finish the season at home Tuesday against Canyon.SOFTBALL

the sixth. Howard went to second on a single by Jessica Batey, and Amy Mosley walked to load the bases.
Katy Lauder relieved for Marble Falls and was greeted rudely as Rogers hit a booming double to the left-center field gap to score two runners. Blanca Avalos’ single plated Mosley for the tying run, and then Monroe singled to bring home Rogers with the lead run. Ducote then added a single that scored Avalos and Monroe and provided the Cougarettes with a three-run cushion.
"We were looking to be aggressive at the plate in the seventh because we had a chance to get to their pitcher in the sixth and we let it slip away," Canyon head coach Kevin Randle said.
“We just kept fighting back and refused to let them beat us. We have had our backs to the wall for two straight games and we have responded. So I think we have proven we belong in the playoffs.”
Rogers, Monroe, Ducote and Howard had two hits each for the Cougarettes’ 10-hit attack, and six different players scored for Canyon. Nikki Kruse (7-5) earned the victory in with 2 2/3 innings of one-run, one-hit pitching in relief of Howard.
Marble Falls (15-16-1, 4-6) was led by Whittlesey’s two hits and two runs, and two hits from Lee-Ann Jukes, who flit a long home run over the Centerfield fence in the fifth inning to give Marble Falls the lead. It was the first home run by Marble Falls this season. Lauder took the loss for the Lady Stangs after giving up three runs on four hits in the telling seventh inning.— Steve Habel contributed to this story.
Cards edge Astros
ST. LOUIS (AP) — So Taguchi and Mark Grudzielanek each hit a two-run double, and the St. Louis Cardinals’ previously untouchable bullpen withstood a midgame meltdown, squandering almost all of a seven-run cushion in an 8-7 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday night.
Starting pitcher Jason Marquis (3-0) had two hits and scored twice for the Cardinals, who have won seven of eight. But he labored through 5 2-3 innings, striking out eight and throwing 108 pitches. After leading 8-1 in the sixth, St. Louis needed four relievers to end the Astros’ three-game winning streak.
The Cardinals’ bullpen hadn’t allowed a run in 17 1-3 innings over a nine-game span and
entered this three-game series with a 3.34 ERA. St. Louis used four pitchers in the Astros’ five-run sixth, when Randy Flores hit the only batter he faced with a pitch and Al Reyes gave up a three-run double to Adam Everett before Julian Tavarez got Jason Lane on a force play with the bases loaded to end the inning.
In the seventh, Tavarez gave up a home run to Morgan Ensberg that narrowed the gap to 8-7. Then Tavarez settled down, retiring six of the next eight hitters.
Jason Isringhausen worked a scoreless ninth for his sixth save in six chances. Astros starter Brandon Duckworth (0-1) walked three and had a throwing error in the Cardinals’ five-run second.
