New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 21, 1995, New Braunfels, Texas Friday, April 21,1995 ■ Herakj-Zeitung ■ 9 Early Bird Safety Bun raises $800 for CASA Visitors check out one of the 89 entries in the Early Bird Safety Run. People wondering about the Easter egg-hued older autos roaming the New Braunfels area over Easter weekend should know that the third annual Early Bird Safety Run was a success. This event has always been scheduled to coincide with Gruene Market Days. The purpose of the run is to have an experienced team inspect the hand-built cars to ensure they are constructed safely beyond what is required for state inspections. This year drew 89 entries, which is exceptional considering it was a holiday. On Saturday; participants from as far away as Kansas and Colorado, in addition to entrants from all over Texas, enjoyed various games, shopping in Gruene, buying raffle tickets on the Blackwell Welding and Manufacturing donated BBQ pit, and cruising through New Braunfels to Whataburg-er for socializing and fries. Sunday, a church service by Dick Lux, Jim Rowlett, and Craig Crow-den was followed by award ceremonies* The proceeds ($800) of this year’s event were presented to Debra Wolford of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), 210-620-5536. Each year, this rod mn is put on by Steve Chontos, Guadalupe River State Park Earth Day Activities The date is April 22,1995. Special Children’s events are from 2*4 p.m. Children of all ages can participate in several wProject Wild" activities. An important feature we added to the children's activities will be several working solar ovens on display. People will be able to try cookies, hot dogs, pizza, eta cooked by the power of the sun, in an ovAn made out of cardboard boxes and aluminum foil. We also have Bird Man, David Mckelvey, who will be bn hand at the Guadalupe River SP amphitheater for his famous bird and animal program. These activities will be facilitated by the Somerset High School Science Club, New Braunfels Middle School Science Club, Boerne High School Science Club, Churchill Science Club as well as other volunteers from the friends of Guadalupe River/Honey Creek, Inc.
