Three fire departments respond to afternoon blaze
VFW Post 7110 to host Loyalty Day activities
The Veterans of Foreign Wan Post 71 IO will be sponsoring several activities in observance of Loyalty Day, May I.
Among activities included in the Loyalty Day event will be a flag raising, speech, open house and coffee and donuts. The public is invited to attend.
Fhrstovmr Epicurean Extrevaflanxa on tap April 24 at Oreana
The first-ever Epicurean Extravaganza will be held on Sunday, April 24 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Gruene Mansion Inn.
Tickets can be purchased at the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, the Comal County Women's Center and any participating local restaurants.
The event is being sponsored by the New Braunfels Restaurant Association.
Proceeds will benefit the Comal County Women's Center. Call 625-2954 for more information.
Amorlean Legion Pool 179 Amateur Chill Cook-Off
The American Legion Post 179 will sensor the second Amateur Chili Cook-Off fond-raiaer Sunday, April 24 at 410 W. Coll Street.
Individuals or companies whishing to enter a cooking team may contact the American Legion at 625-0179 after 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Public is invited to attend for tasting. No charge for entering the grounds.
A chili cooks dance is scheduled for Saturday night, April 23.

The free admission and guest docents for the museum exhibits are part of a Week of the Child Celebration.

A structure fire on West Zipp Road on Monday destroyed the homeef a Guadalupe County family.
Firefighters from New Braunfels, Lake Dunlap and McQueeney fire departments were called to the scene. The house was fully involved when firefighters arrived.
Two adults and three children were inside the home when the fire started. All were able to escape the blaze.
The house belongs to Rosemary Villarreal. According to her brother Ralph Villarreal, Rosemary’s boyfriend, Rene Rodriguez was lighting a fire in the barbecue grill behind the home when the fire started.
Villarreal said the branches, which were from a mesquite tree, in the barbecue pit were sticking up and sparks began flying up.
“We looked up and discovered our roof was on fire. I told everyone to grab the kids and told everyone to leave," said Rodriguez.
“You can always buy new things but you can’t buy new people,” he said.
Officials from the Guadalupe County Sheriffs Office confirmed that the fire was accidental.
“Apparently the boyfriend was burning wood in the barbecue pit at the back of the residence. He walked inside and when he came
back outside the roof was on fire," said ILE. Ncmec, of the Guadalupe County Sheriffs Office.
Ncmec said Rosemary Villarreal was living in the residence with her sister. Ralph Villarreal was visiting when the fire began.

The home was a one-story trailer than had a wood-frame addition built onto the front side. The house and its contents were completely destroyed.
Shirley Offerman^ of the Comal County American Red Cross, responded to the fire Monday. She said the Red Cross is providing money for a motel room, clothing, shoes and groceries. She also said if the family finds a rental home the Red Cross will pay the first month’s rent..
The fire was not in the city limits of New Braunfels. Any Anther investigation will be conducted by the Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Don McFarland.

League of Women Voters to host forum for CISD hopefuls

The Comal County League of Women Voters will host a forum featuring candidates for the Comal Independent School District Board of Trustees, Tuesday, April 19,7 p.m. at the Guadalupe Valley Telephone Cooperative building.
All eight candidates for the three contested district places are expected to i candidate v

minute opening statement followed by a question and answer session.
Members of the public will have a chance to ask questions of the candidates. Each of the three districts will be divided into three question sessions.
The public will fill out question cards that will be presented to the candidates.
Each candidate will have a chance to respond. The name of the questioner will not be given. A moderator will read the questions
County Government Week being recognized at courthouse this week

This week is County Government Week in Comal County. A host of activities are scheduled for all to attend.
Wednesday, tours of the courthouse will be given to local students in the afternoon. All citizens are invited to come by an tour the courthouse all day.
A film, “Counties, The Glue That Holds Texas Together,” will be shown in the Commissioners' Court room.
The Commissioners’ Court regul meeting Thursday morning will I shown that evening at 7 p.m. on < span of the local cable channels.

Motorcyclist struck on Plaza

Two people were injured in an accident that occurred on the Main Plaza Monday afternoon.
According to reports, Richard Glenn Dodd, 32, of Canyon Lake, was injured when his motorcycle struck the side of a station wagon.
Dodd was transported by New Braunfels Emergency Medical Services to McKenna Memorial Hospital. He was treated and released
Also inured was Rebecca Rubio, 3, of New Braunfels, who was a passenger in the station wagon. Reports show she was taken to McKenna Memorial Hospital by a private vehicle. Officials said she was treated and released.
The accident occurred at 2:09 p.m. near East San Antonio Street. According to reports, Rubio was driving a 1978 Chevrolet Malibu station wagon and Dodd was driving a 1979 Yamaha motorcycle.
Reports show both were driving around tire Plaza. Rubio was in the outside lane and Dodd was in the inside lane.
According to reports, Dodd was attempting to change lanes and to exit to San Antonio Street when the vehicles collided.
