New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 18, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas mm __ Herald-Zeitung o Friday, April 18.1997 a 9AReligion BriefsWorld* s largest cathedral installs new dean NEW YORK (AP) — A businessman-tumed-Episcopal priest is the new dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the world’s ’* largest cathedral. The Rev. Dr. Harry Pritchett, 61, was installed Saturday as the eighth dean of the 105-year-old church. He succeeds the Very Rev. James Parks Morton, who retired after 25 years. Prior to his appointment, Pritchett served as rector of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Atlanta. Pritchett, a native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., graduated from the University •of Alabama. After a stint in the Army, he returned to Alabama to work in his .family’s insurance and real-estate brokerage firm. Pritchett’s focus turned from business to religion in the early 1960s, and he earned a master of divinity degree from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1964. He added a doctor of divinity degree from Center College, in Danforth, Ky., in 1981. Pritchett was rector of churches in Birmingham and Huntsville, Ala., prior to his work in Atlanta.Fund to rebuild torched black churches started ATLANTA — The nation’s largest black church association has deposited two $100,000 checks in two Atlanta banks, beginning a national campaign to raise money to rebuild burned churches. The Congress of National Black Churches Inc. presented the checks to Citizens Trust Bank and Capital City Bank. Bank customers and others will raise money to match the deposits. In January, the association announced a $12.8 million campaign to rebuild burned churches — using fire-retardant materials. The group received a $6 million grant from the Indianapolis-based Lilly Foundation.Religious relic taken during war on Its way home RANKIN, Pa. (AP) — During the Korean War, Air Force Staff Sgt. Jack Kudla salvaged a sacred burial shroud from the rubble of a bombed-out Russian Orthodox church in Seoul. Four decades later, Kudla, a devout member of a Russian Orthodox church in Pennsylvania, joined about 70 other worshipers to return the religious relic to the rebuilt St. Nicholas Cathedral in the capital city of South Korea. As he explored the church ruins in the fall of 1951, Kudla found a wooden cabinet behind the altar and pulled out a 15-pound velvet tapestry, the kind used in Easter rituals. Fearing the shroud would be destroyed, he mailed the purple-and-gold tapestry to his suburban Pittsburgh church for safekeeping. Kudla, 69, a retired foreman of a tool factory, was located following a dogged Internet search started by the congregation in South Korea. Now the shroud is on its way back home.Singers help preserve Sacred Harp hymns BARNESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A group of Georgia singers is helping preserve old-fashioned Sacred Harp hymn singing, performing in the rhythmic, a cappella style at churches across the state. “It’s kind of strange to 20th-century ears,” says Raymond Hamrick, a Sacred Harp singer from Macon. “It’s medieval in sound.’’ The group’s members performed recently at die Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church. Liberty Hill is unique because its last members died a few years ago. The local historical society maintains the church just for the singers, who perform there once a year. In Sacred Harp singing, the singers sit in a “hollow square” facing inward. Trebles, altos, tenors and basses each make up a side of the square. The melody is always sung by the tenors, and women and men sing both the alto and treble parts. Singer takes turns leading, giving the song’s pitch and swinging a hand to count time. Singers in the square reflect that movement with their own hands and their softly stomping feet. -iMinisters ptan hungsr strflks to protest chain gangs DENTON, Md. (AP) — When the Rev. Charles Cephas learned that Queen Anne’s County planned to start prison chain gangs this month, he immediately envisioned black slaves in leg irons. “When I think of slavery, the first thing that comes to my mind is the chain and the whip,” he says. So Cephas, a black Pentecostal preacher at the Full Gospel Church of God in Denton, is organizing a 30-day rolling hunger strike in which different volunteers will refuse food and water for two days to protest the plan to shackle prisoners together during work details. Cephas plans to go first, camping at the detention center parking lot during his fast. He will be replaced by other volunteers from several churches in the area.
