New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 17, 2007, New Braunfels, Texas Virginia shooting eclipses U.T. Tower incident as worst SWAT teams formed after Austin shootings By Suzanne Ashe The Herald-Zeitung NEW BRAUNFELS Texans, Monday's deadly shootings at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., evoked memories of another horrifying shooting spree at a university. Last summer marked the 40th anniversary of the massacre at the University of Texas tower, which was the nation's worst mass shooting until Monday. On Aug. 1,1966, Charles Whitman perched on the 28th floor observation deck of the UT Tower and shot passersby in the city and on the campus below. I Ie had killed his mother and his wife the previous night. Whitman, a former Marine and UT student, killed 14 people and wounded 31 others before he was shot dead by Austin police officers Ray Martinez and I louston McCoy. Martinez, now a New Braunfels res ident, later became a Texas Ranger. He said Monday that he couldn’t comment on how the police handled the Virginia Tech shootings. “I am not there and don’t have the whole picture.” he said. “I can’t make comments — pro or con — sitting in the background Monday morning quarterbacking.” However, Martinez said he was praying for the families of the shooting victims. “They need our prayers” he said. “I’m hoping everything turns out for the best and hope the situation will be taken care of in expeditious manner. Its very sad." Martinez said that as in any crime scene, further details will emerge about Monday’s gunman as soon as the smoke clears and till of the police reports are filed. “Maybe he left some written records,” he said. “We’re just going to have to wait and then we may be able to make a determination as to what caused him to do this.” Martinez said after he and Officer Houston McCoy shot and killed See TOWER Page 5 Tor many Ray Martinez Final Score San Antonio: 91 Memphis:    101 TUESDAY, APRIL 17,2007 Zeitung Summer school class plans delayed ■ Construction bids approved for two schools By Jessica Sanders The Herald-Zeitung New Braunfels Independent School District trustees delayed approval of summer school classes at their regular meeting Monday. Superintendent Mike Smith said he was concerned that four weeks of summer school are not enough to grant credit for a semester-long course. “I think it s something we need to review again,” he said. "There are certain standards and requirements I want to be sure we are meeting.” Smith said recent changes by the Texas Education Agency require students to complete four years of math and four years of science to graduate. These new requirements will allow less time for electives during the regular school year, he said. Rosalyn Bratcher, assistant superintendent for curriculum and development, said summer courses usually include semester-long electives such See SUMMER, Page 3 Barr to replace Waldrip as D.A. Investigators gave no motive for the attack. The gunman’s name was not immediately released, and it was not known if he was a student. “Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,” Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said. “The university is shocked and indeed horrified.” But he was also faced with difficult questions about the university ’s handling of the emergency and whether it did enough to warn students and protect them after the first burst of gunfire. Some students bitterly complained they got no warning from the university until an e-mail that arrived more than two hours after the first shots rang out. Wielding two handguns and carrying multiple dips of ammunition, the killer opened fire about 7:15 a.m. on the fourth floor of West Ambler Johnston, a high-rise coed dormitory, then stormed Norris I kill, a classroom building a half-mile away on the other side of the 2,600-acre campus. Some of the doors at Norris Hall were found chained from the inside, apparently by the gunman.
