This increase comes despite the fact that it is illegal for anyone under 18 to purchase lottery tickets. In adults, the survey revealed that betting had increased from 49 percent in 1992 (a few months before the lottery began) to 68 percent in 1995. However, 20 percent of those adults gamble only on the lottery, according to the report. Compulsive gambling affects 400,000 adults and nearly 26,000 teens in Texas. It is a serious problem that should be given a great deal of thought As an adult, one is free to make his or her own decisions. But it is also ones responsibility to teach and consider the welfare of the younger generation. The lottery in and of itself isn't bad. But getting hooked on gambling at a young age can lead to serious consequences down the road for young and old alike. Sadly, when it comes to compulsive gambling, there is no safe bet.
