Laughlin loses, Morales wins in runoffs
By KATIE FAIRBANK
Associated Press Writer
DALLAS (AP) — Come November, Texans will see new names on the ballot in several races.
The image of newcomer Victor Morales, who had previously only held a city council position, appealed to the scattering bf Texans who voted. They selected the political neophyte in Tuesday’s runoff elections as the Democratic nominee over longtime Washington professional John Bryant.
“I think a lot of people very much love the idea of a guy who’s not connected in any way to an organized effort doing well. That’s really an irresistible type of an image, and I understand completely,” he said.
Morales, 46, now will square off against Republican Sen. Phil Gramm, who is looking for his third term.
“Life is straggle.... Many times you get knocked down, but you get back up. I’m sure many more times in this six, seven months against Phil Gramm that I’ll get knocked down, but you’d better believe I’ll always get back up,” he said.
Voters decided against incumbent Greg Laughlin. Instead, Ron Paul will be representing the 14th District.
“The voters decided they wanted a change,” Laughlin said.
Laughlin, who had defected from the Democratic party last summer, is the first sitting congressman to be defeated this year.
Paul once headed the Libertarian
Party presidential ticket before returning to the GOP.
Laughlin’s defeat is sure to embarrass national and state party leaders, who worked overtime to ensure his victory and prove their commitment to party switchers. He was one of five House members who jumped to the Republican party last year.
Paul, who spent heavily for the runoff on a conservative platform, now faces lawyer Charles “Lefty” Morris, who was unopposed in the Democratic primary.
In El Paso, Silvestre Reyes is new on the political scene after winning the Democratic nomination in the 16th District congressional race. Reyes retired from his job as Border Patrol sector chief.
Texans hit by high gas prices since January
By KEVIN O’HANLON
Associated Press Writer
DALLAS (AP) — It has to do with the price of crude oil, New York Mercantile Exchange volume and United Nations talks with Iraq, but all most folks know is that it costs more recently to fill the ol’ family sedan with gas.
The price of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is up an average of IO cents a gallon since the first of the year.
“No kidding! What’s up with that?”said Joe DeLaurier of Dallas, who admitted to “sticker shock” while filling up hjs car over the weekend. “What happened to a dollar-six a gallon?”
According to the American Automobile Association, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas over Easter weekend was $1.15 — a 9.5 percent jump since Christmas.
The national average was $1.18 a gallon, up 9 cents since Christmas.
Prices in the AAA survey of Texas cities ranged from $1.11 a gallon in Waco and Beaumont to $1.22 in El
Among the reasons experts cite for rising prices:
—Crude oil inventories in the United States are down 12 percent from last year, causing prices for the commodity to jump, according to the American Petroleum Institute in Wash
—Last week, May crude oil futures rose to $22.75 a barrel from $21.47; May unleaded gasoline rose to 68.76 cents a gallon from 64.85 cents.
—There are doubts about whether a deal can be reached on the U.N. “oil-for-food plan” with Iraq.
