On anniversary, couple celebrates generous friends
DEAR ABBY: Here’s a suggestion for “Anonymous, Please,” the man who will be celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary soon and wanted to request that the guests bring no gifts.
Last year we were confronted with the same situation for our 25th. Knowing that guests would bring gifts anyway, we suggested they bring canned goods for the needy. Our invitations read:
“Your love and friendship is the only gift we need. However, if you wish to bring something, please make it an item of food that will be donated to the needy.”
Abby, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our friends! We hauled IO boxes of canned goods and almost $200 in cash down to the local “soup kitchen" that feeds the homeless and needy.
What a great party we had — filled with family and friends who made it all the more beautiful by
sharing with those less fortunate. You may use my name.
ELEANOR BURLEY. STERLING HEIGHTS, MICH.
DEAR ELEANOR: That suggestion appeared in my column two years ago, but it’s worth repeating periodically. Thank you, Eleanor. And may you celebrate many more happy anniversaries.
DEAR ABBY: I’m writing to offer some advice to younger readers regarding dating:
I am 27, and ever since I was in high school. I adopted my own personal code for dating. It is: Any guy who psks me out I will go with at least once — unless I have reason to believe he could be dangerous.
Since then, I have helped some very shy guys develop their selfconfidence, and I’ve established some good friendships and a few meaningful relationships.
Not every date has been great — a few have been real duds — but if a guy asks me out, at least I give him a chance. (Accepting a date doesn’t mean you have to marry anyone.)
Also, after the first date, I generally insist on paying my share of the tab. I’m not rich — I’m a middleclass working woman — but I know how expensive dating is for most guys.
I haven’t met Mr. Right yet, but in the meantime, I’m enjoying myself.
CYNTHIA IN GEORGIA
DEAR CYNTHIA: It’s easy to see why you’re not sitting at home, waiting for your telephone to ring. You’re a giver, not a taker.
You appear to be a young woman who likes herself and is comfortable to be around.
There are two kinds of people in the world — those who walk into a room and say, “There you are” — and those who say, “Here I am!” You belong in the “there you are” category. You could give lessons.
“How to Be Popular” is for everyone who feels left out and wants an improved social life. It's an excellent guide to becoming a better conversationalist and a more attractive person. To order, send a long, business-size, self-addressed envelope, plus check or money order for $.‘1.95 ($4.50 in Canada) to: Dear Abby, Popularity Booklet, P.O. Box 447, Mount Morris, 111. 81054. Born today, you are fiery, impulsive and quick to quarrel — even without cause. Of course, then, you will find it necessary to employ a good deal of self-control throughout your long life, or you will find more than your share of hardship along the way Give your impulses free rein, and you will only bring upon yourself the kind of misfortune that others strive at all times to avoid; control yourself, and the world can be your oyster. Your desires and opinions are strong and unchangeable Both men and women born today will find that sex appeal can prove a valuable tool in both personal and professional endeavors — and neither of the sexes will have many qualms about using such appeal to achieve their desired ends All those born on this date are rather susceptible to sw#~* talk Alto born on this dato ort: Ward Bond and Paul Robaaon, actors; Hugh Hafnar, publisher.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ronald Reagan says a new biography of his wife, Nancy, is filled with lies that “clearly exceed die bounds of decency,” and he’s sure the buying public will judge die book harshly.
Harshly or not, readers in huge numbers are judging for dieniselves. By the end of the day Monday, 150,000 new copies were ordered. That’s in addition to the 600,000 already in or en route to bookstores around die country.
Kitty Kelley’s “Nancy Reagan: die Unauthorized Biography” portrays the former first lady as an abusive
skinflint who ran the White House and carried on an affair with Frank
Kelley claims Reagan himself was with another woman on the day his daughter was bom, dial he and Nancy tried pot when he was governor and that he had a one-night stand with an 18-year-old when he was 50.
“The flagrant and absurd falsehoods cited in a recently published book clearly exceed die bounds of decency,” the former president said in a statement Monday. “They are patently untrue.”
