Only one Comal Independent School District school board candidate plans to spend more than $500 to get elected in May.
Frank Baker, challenger for District 3, has raised $1,000 for his campaign so far, according to the finance report he filed Thursday with school district officials.
All the funds came from one donor, Pat Gaunt, CEO of Tidal Petroleum.
"I did not plan on raising that much,” Baker said. “But Mr. Gaunt is a family friend and when he found out I was

committee Chair Julian Reed handed over the Texan of the Year award, Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce Chair of the Board Ron Reaves handed him a large framed declaration.
“Please convey to Laura Bush our pleasure in making her a princess of the city of a prince,” he told Evans.

running, he said he wanted to help me out. I don't plan on raising any more money at this time.”
Baker’s treasurer, Michelle Clark, has spent $286.74 — $227.54 for signs and $59.20 for postage.
The other four candidates on May’s ballot — Mark Smith, running against Baker in the District 3 race, and incumbent John Bertelsen, Donna Holmes and Wylie Queen, running for District 4 — filed declarations saying they did not plan on raising or spending more than $500.
Smith said he had not been as fortunate as his opponent
in finding a large donor but it was not slowing down his campaign efforts.
“My strategy has been to walk the neighborhoods and talk to voters,” he said.
If candidates who filed the below $500 declaration end up raising more money than anticipated, they must file a campaign finance report at the next deadline, April 29.
District I incumbent Laura Kistner, who was running unopposed, filed paperwork verifying she would not spend any money on the race. The District I election was canceled by trustees March 30.
“No matter how dark the moment, Laura Bush fills it with light and optimism. That’s what the president gets to see every day.”

“Before George Bush ran for governor, someone asked me if I thought he would win. I told them anyone who was good enough for Laura Bush was good enough to do anything he wanted to do,” Evans said.
“Of course, now he’s our president.”
During his days as secretary of commerce, Evans said he had the opportunity to observe the first family dur
ing some of the nation’s darkest hours.
“No matter how dark the moment, Laura Bush fills it with light and optimism,” he said. “That’s what the president gets to see every day.”
The Texas Legislative Conference will continue with sessions on water recapture, public school funding, new roads and revenue options today.
