Reno native Admir Ljames Fife area deaths submarine warfare authority Dies Admiral James Fife jr., us a native of Reno and one of the nation s Foremost authorities on submarine warfare died nov. 17. In the submarine base Hospital at Groton Conn. He was 78. Word received Here from his brother William who survives him in Palo Alto calif., was that adm Fife had suffered from emphysema for several years and had been admitted to the Hospital about two weeks before his death born on a ranch near Reno in 1897, he attended schools Here and entered the United states naval Academy in 1914 he was graduated in 1917 with a class that was advanced in order to place midshipmen in Active service in world War i. After a Brief stint in Convoy duties he entered and became a specialist in the submarine service he was promoted rapidly both in peace and wartime and on Jan 7, 1942 shortly after the . Entry into world War ii he was promoted to Captain he held the wartime rank of Commodore in 1943. At the Start of the War he commanded the submarine school at Groton Conn., where he was eventually to die. While commanding task Force 72, based at Brisbane Australia during the greater part of world War ii his submarines were the Scourge of japanese ship Ping in the South and South West Pacific. In 1951, president Truman nominated the then rear Admiral to be Deputy chief of adm. James Fife or. Naval operations with the Grade of vice Admiral on his retirement in 1955, after 38 years of Active service he was promoted to the rank of full Admiral following world War ii adm. Fife was a member of the joint strategic Survey committee of the joint chiefs of staff in Washington following which came his assignment As Deputy chief of naval operations the Post he held on retirement. In organization of the North Atlantic defense plans he was Deputy commander in chief of Allied naval forces directly under the British commander. Lord Louis Mountbatten. Fife attributed the respiratory ailments that eventually contributed to his death to foul air in the Navy s Early submarines which he started com manding in 1918 but Fife considered an air scrubber developed under his command in the Atlantic Fleet after world War ii As one of the most significant a c complis ments in sub Marine history. Adm Fife won Many recognitions for outstanding service including the distinguished service medal with two Gold stars the army air medal and numerous Navy citations. Great Britain honoured him with the order of the British Empire and the Netherlands awarded him the order of the Orange Nassau. In 1946 an honorary doctor of Laws degree was conferred on him by the University of Nevada following his retirement adm. Fife accepted an appointment As director of the Marine historical association the Mystic in Mystic Conn. In accepting the position adm. Fife said he had a great desire to use his experience in emphasizing the character building values of the country s maritime traditions for the younger generation.
