TERRE HAUTE MURDER; NEGRO TRE ASSAILANTCUT THE THROAT OF THOMAS BURKE WITH A RAZOR.ALSO SLASHED MRS. BURKEHusband Died and the Murderer E» caped—Latter Had Been Employed by the Burke Family.[Special to The Indianapolis News.]TERRE HAUTE, Ind., September 8.-While Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Burk* were asleep last night. Matthew Alexander, a negro, entered their aleeplng-room and •lashed both with a razor, Mr. Burkedying Instantly.Mrs. Burke awakened and found the negro at her bedside. As she tried to get out of bed, the negro slashed her face with a razor. Her husband also awakened and Alexander rushed at him. With one blow he cut him across the throat, killing him. The negro rushed out of the house and f scaped.Alexander had been employed for a number of years as a stableman by the Burkes, and recently had been drinking heavily. Burke was forty years of age and a motorman. He was a brother of Michael Burke, formerly superintendent of the street railway company.Alexander recently became addicted to the cocaine habit, and It Is believed the tragedy was enacted during a temporary fit of insanity, due to the drug.
