Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - September 22, 1970, Mount Pleasant, Iowa
The it pleasant news Section one 2 sections vol. 92, no. 223 it. Pleasant Iowa tuesday evening september 22, 1970 Price to cents these Days by John Chamberlain the hardening reaction against violence the pitch is in tills is not going to he a propitious autumn for Campus revolutionaries. The so called Princeton plan for excusing students from classroom work for two weeks Proir to elections in order to work for radicalized a a peace candidates just Isnit going Over. The reaction against a a politicized universities has set in if Only for the cynical reason that funds for education have started to dry up. University Heads have started to take seriously the threat that they might lose their tax exemption if they continue to lend institutional support to political causes. President Kingman Brewster of Yale put the matter in perspective when he sent a memorandum to members of his administrative personnel saying that the Fellows of the Yale corporation had adopted his recommendation that the University Calendar for 1970-71 should remain unchanged. Just last Spring Brewster was a a ambivalent about the Princeton proposition. Reflection during the summer months hardened him and he has now retreated from his ambivalence. It so happens that Kingman Brewster is gifted with a sixth sense about the Way the wind is wowing. I say this with ail respect. I could not agree with the objective Justice of his observation last May when he said that he was a about the ability of any Black Man to receive Justice in an american court. But Brewster knew that the physical property of his University was in dire danger from the hippie Yipp Des who working in conjunction with the students for a democratic society undergraduates were threatening to take Yale apart just to demonstrate revolutionary sympathy for the Black panthers who were or will be on trial in new Haven charged with the murder of a fellow Panther Alex Rackley. Too by turning the various College quadrangles into hospitality suites on the May Day weekend and by indicating sympathy for any Black seeking Justice Brewster succeeded in heaping coals of fire on the beads of the radicals who might otherwise have Tom the place up. The University administrators re America had been frightfully wrong to let the Campus resell reach the Point of violence and Brewster no doubt deserves some criticism for having gone along with his Peers in yielding to a soft attitude. But it is hard to find fault with him for mane vering to get through the difficult period last Spring. Now it is a new year. Connecticut Justice has Given one Panther a fair triad. The reaction against toleration of violence is in full swing. People Are tired to death of bombings hijackings guerrillas Rock festivals that degenerate into pot parties insults to the Flag strikes against going to class arson Rac ism to reverse and kowtowing to political blackmail. The politicians who were Riding the rebellion a fear ago Are now scurrying for cover. In his Massachusetts election Campaign Teddy Kennedy has blossomed out As the hardest sort of enemy of Campus violence. Joe Duffey of Connecticut the americans for democratic action head who is the democratic nominee for senator has been trying to laugh off As a bad joke his old statement that he is a a revisionist la new York state governor Nelson Rockefeller has welcomed the support of that most conservative Democrat Mario proc Acline who tried and failed to beat mayor John Lindsay in the 1069 new York City mayoralty Campaign. O o o things Are looking up for Independent candidates who have deserted the two party system to run against Liberal republicans and Over Liberal democrats. It would be an overturn if the Imide pendent candidate for senator Tom Dodd should win in Connecticut and if the conservative party nominee Jim Buckley should become the next senator from new York state. But Dodd who was turned Down by the democratic organization1 in his bid for renomination last Spring has been receiving ovations from the policemen a associations the firemen the operating engineers and the teamsters All of whom approve his support of the Nixon foreign policy. And Jim Buckley is virtually certain to get the nod from the Procaccino democrats in addition to help from Many defecting republicans. The conservative swing is on. If any one of our College campuses Quot wows before november with More bombings or burnings or manhandling of Deans the swing school Board hears reports canvasses organizes by Nancy Leysen the it.
