The it pleasant news Section one 2 sections vol 92, no. 216mt. Pleasant Iowa monday evening september 14, 1970 Price to cents show amps these Days by John Chamberlain a revolt against academic disorder Munich a if what is being said Here at the sessions of the Mont Pelerin society is any indication the coming year on american campuses will see some Tough showdowns Between nihilistic students and the More conservative professors who Are fed up to the Teeth Over the breakdown of academic order. The educators Here along with the economists in attendance Are drawn from two score universities in the United states and the rest of the world. The suppressed rage against the Way things have been going in the University world has cropped up in discussion after discussion nominally devoted to exploring the place of the business Enterprise in contemporary society. It has been a common observation that the intellectuals of the Western world have Little use for the businessman. In previous years the free Market economists have included such eminent people As sex Chancellor Ludwig Erhard creator of West Germany so economic in promoting Freedom for the enterprises they were Able to take the negative attitude of the intellectuals in stride. This year however everything is different. Thus Dean g. M. Wattles of Rockford College in Illinois departed from the printed text of a paper on a the american educators View of the entrepreneur to denounce the a Princeton plan for excusing students for two weeks in the autumn to Campaign against anybody and everybody who is for the Nixon foreign policy. The spreading idea that the University must become a a social Agency for action in the political realm has some of the educators very worried. It could mean the end of tax exemption for the colleges and also the end of important private financial support. Too the most scathing analysis of american higher education came from professor James m. Buchanan of Virginia who said the american College student has merely taken to acting out what he has been taught. In Buchanan a View the seeds of contemporary anarchy were planted thirty years ago by faculties that have nothing but contempt for traditional Western and Christian values. Until very recently however the anarchy remained limited to the realm of ideas. Boys and girls were free to espouse All manner of heresy within the cloistered collegiate Walls and the professors were free to encourage the most egregious intellectual fantasies. It was All a charade just so Long As three external institutions a the family the Church and the Law saw that the Campus commitments to Radical subversion did not leap into the streets. 1 too order within the family Structure says professor Buchanan was preserved by sanctions. Papa either spanked or Cut off the allowance the Church warned of divine retribution. The Law insisted on penalties for wrongdoing. Then sometime in the sixties the family control Over the Young was dissolved by the accumulating acids of extreme permissiveness. The Church prodded by the likes of chaplain William Sloane coffin of Yale went All out for the a social gospel a which Means that it has substituted collective political action for a concern with individual salvation. And the Law As interpreted by permissive justices has made effective prosecution a sometime thing. Buchanan even went so far As to say that the big Law schools have become the most subversive institutions in America and that Nixon would do Well if he announced that henceforward he would Only appoint non lawyers to the supreme court. The idea that the students no longer held in Check by the family the Church and the Law have merely been acting out their education suggests that society to protect itself May have to let the universities do Down the Drain. What Good Are they if they Are not training anybody to sustain a decent social order Why should the taxpayer or the private donor work himself to the Bone to turn his children Over to a Type of education that is expressed by bombing laboratories in Wisconsin and burning .
