Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - October 28, 1970, Mount Pleasant, Iowa The it pleasant news partly Cloudy vol. 92, no. 254 it. Pleasant Iowa wednesday evening october 28, 1970 Price to cents these Days by John Chamberlain which lever and Why because they have searched for a Republican trend in the election Campaign and found it wanting some of our trusted masters of prognosis have discerned a democratic trend. For myself a and this is my Way of sticking my neck out this year a i find Only an attitudinal trend that people Are having a very difficult time relating to individual candidates. There have been no real issues in the Campaign Only the ghosts of issues left Over from last Spring. Politicians in both parties Are perfectly sincere in wanting to liquidate the Vietnam War and Nixon seems to be doing it in a Way that is consonant with Honor so where is the argument there the economic picture is not As Good As it might be but the democrats who have tried rather feebly to exploit regional unemployment were in office when the inflation began to get out of hand and Are therefore suspect when they raise bread and butter issues. The so called social Issue that everybody talks about involves morals before it involves politics and All our candidates have been falling Over each other to proclaim their morality. The bombings the kidnapping the hijackings and the random violence that Are part of our world scene have everybody in a sober Frame of mind. Nobody is campaigning for office on a platform of a off the pigs a or a Justice for William Kunstler a or a free speech for or. so the Only heat generated by the social Issue is the heat expressed by candidates who object to being tarred with their injudicious expressions of by gone Days when they were accusing the police of being fascists or storm troopers in Blue. Too Nixon in his sudden spurt of stumping Over wide areas has judged the popular mood correctly people everywhere want to be Able to live orderly and predictable lives free of the menace of the dope Pusher in the Public High school free of the threat of arson or bombing. But How does Nixon a very commendable preaching help Lenore Romney in Michigan unless a Case can be made out that the incumbent senator Philip Hart is some kind of monster How does it enable a person to judge in the Connecticut senatorial race Between Weicker Dodd and Duffey All of whom have sincere programs for attacking the drug problem in states where there Are Normal two party races the results could add up Overall to a very mixed National pattern. In the states where there Are three candidates for the Senate predictions become even Chancie. I would bet almost anything that Independent Harry Byrd will win in Virginia but an analyst writing a week or so before the election would have to be out of his head to say who is going to win in Connecticut or new York. Too let us say that you Are voting in Connecticut and have it firmly fixed in apr mind that the democratic candidate Joe Duffey would on the basis of his past record for Way out liberalism make an undesirable senator. Maybe you like Tom Dodd the Independent candidate because of his foreign policy record he has invariably been right in judging soviet motives and behaviour. But Lowell Weicker the Republican has been a Man of fecund ideas involving the improvement of the Domestic scene both inside his state and out. Other things being equal you would have to balance the importance of world affairs off against the need for a better Domestic environment before deciding Between Dodd and Welcher. But let us say that the last minute private polls say that you must vote for Welcher instead of Dodd or vice versa to keep Duffey from winning. The whole business becomes a Little nerve racking and so you go into the Booth and press a what lever maybe you done to consciously know until you have actually started to move your hand. In new York state if you Are a Republican with conservative inclinations you would very probably vote for the conservative party candidate Jim Buckley. But if you Are a Liberal should you go for the Democrat Richard Ottinger or the Republican Liberal Charles Good Ell again it could be a matter of what the private polls Tell you is necessary to head your chief enemy off at the pass. Personally i want to see Nixon men win. Nixon has been a very Gallant spokesman for a decent american position in the world and he deserves a Good supporting cast. He deserves to be rid of Bill Ful Bright As the chairman of the sen bomb residence of suspect in kidnapping Quito Ecuador up a one person was killed and two injured today in the explosion of a bomb in the Guayaquil Home of former vice president Jorge Zabala Baquerizo sought As a prime suspect in the kidnapping of Brig.
